Pc wont turn on :(

Thread Starter
Hey,

So this morning I went into my study and hit enter on my keyboard to wake my pc up, when I came back it was restarting. It almost got to the windows login stage before restarting again. This time it got to windows login, i logged in and as the desktop was loading it restarted again randomly just like before. Upon restarting this time I get a windows message saying windows didn't shut down correctly etc etc and then bam, restarted again. I walked away for a minute and when i came back the pc was off. I clicked the power button but nothing happened, totally unresponsive. Up until this point I haven't had any problems like this, my pc never randomly restarts, overheats or turns off. I opened the box and everything is firmly connected.

any help would be awesome!

Did it do a restart within windows or did it just shut down directly to a black screen before starting up again? It could be a hard drive issue, but maybe someone with a similar experience/more knowledge might know better.

Do you have a spare power supply to test if that's the problem?
Otherwise maybe something is overheating, can you check your case for large dust build ups, maybe reseat your HSF and reapply thermal paste on your cpu.

maybe try removing graphics card and run of integrated graphics, and remove all but 1 stick of ram, and all but your boot drive (if you have multiple ssd/hdd) and see if the problem persists with the minimum amount of hardware plugged in possible. Might give you an idea what is causing the problem.

Ok so I took the pc downstairs and blew itout with the air compressor, brought it back up stairs and it works. Was playing fallout four and in a skype call, everything going fine until I try to tab out of fallout 4 and as I did that my pc just turned off. Opened it up everything inside is clean and fine. The ethernet cable in the back of the mobo is still flashing and there's still a light on my headphones that are plugged into the pc even though it is powered off so I turned the power off at the wall socket the pc is plugged into until all the lights and power is stopped in the pc. Turn the wall switch back on, click power on my PC and it starts up.

I'm guessing my power supply is shorting out or?

Seems like a PSU problem, yes. Do you have one spare somewhere just to test it out and to be sure?

The AX1200i power supply is a pretty robust unit, so it would be surprising to see it have those kinds of issues, especially with a system that has a very low power demand to begin with.

One thing to check and possibly change would be your wall outlet itself. I've seen some really cheap wall outlets that either provide intermittent power, random shorts or having one half of the outlet not work at all. They are an easy change out and can help rule out your system and save you considerable diagnostic time and expense.

Do you have any idea what your CPU temps are? Could be a thermal shutdown.

Just because its an AX1200i does not mean it cant be broken.
Even the best can break so rule the PSU out by testing it with a digtal multi meter or be trying another PSU.

I'm not saying it can't be broken, but it would be easier to change a $5 wall outlet first before buying another power supply and going down the diagnostic road.
