Networking a TV in one room to a PC in another

Guys

We are moving to a new house and trying to plan out what we want in each room. For the most part we are good but we have one challenge Im hopinig you can help me with.

Alot of the TV we consume is via the internet and VPNs whether it be CBS or netflix for example. For now its not an issue as the PC is in the lounge room connected via HDMI cable however we do not want this to be the case when we move.

Is there any way to connect a TV as a monitor to a PC via wireless so we can watch in the lounge room but control using a wireless mouse / KB that allows for full PC useage as though I was stilling in front of it?

I know I could set the VPN up at the router level and then use the TVs browser but this presents other challengers I'd like to avoid if possible.

Any suggestions?

Edit: I wonder if the Chromecast would have the signal strength to manage it?

How about a wireless video transmitter?

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-wireless-hdmi-video-transmitter/

Then you could use Splashtop on a tablet to control everything...

Honestly I would drill a hole in the wall to run a USB transmitter. biggrin.gif

Which raises the point... why has no one created a Wifi keyboard and mouse? Atleast I cant find one...

You could do HDMI over ethernet (CAT5)

Requires 2 CAT5 cables but once done, never worry about it again.

What will the TV be used for? Gaming? Videos? Or you want to use the PC on your TV? Fortunately there are several solutions for what you're trying to do.

Let's start out with the new house. What is the wiring like? Do the rooms have RJ11 jacks? Have you checked to see if they are CAT5e/6 with RJ11 faceplates? If so, there is a central location that all of your cables go to - and boom, your whole house is ready for networking. You just need some new RJ45 jacks, face plates, and potentially a patch panel or however you'd want to do that.

As for HDMI over Ethernet, I'd recommend something from Atlona - especially if you're even thinking about doing 4K. You can see their products here: http://atlona.com/product-category/extenders/

I have about 20 of these kits (http://atlona.com/product/at-uhd-ex-70-2ps/) that I purchased for Cisco video conference equipment @ work. Let's just say these are a life saver. I am setting up a new video conference unit and purchased some of these because of the PoE functionality: http://atlona.com/product/at-uhd-ex-70-kit/

Now another option which I haven't tested is Ethernet over Power. Something like this guy: http://www.zyxel.com/us/en/products_services/pla5405.shtml?t=p I'm not entirely sure if you can do HDMI over Ethernet using Powerline. But I don't really see why not... so one of these guys with an Atlona HDMI over Ethernet adapter might do the trick.

As for a keyboard/mouse .. I'm not entirely sure how I would go about this one. I'd probably suggest drilling some holes and repeating USB cables for the wireless receiver you'll be using. USB can go up to about 80ft.

Let me know what your layout looks like and if you want to put the work in to make any of this happen. I'd be glad to give product suggestions and some help.

If you just want the TV to be a screen for playing video/viewing webpages, could check out the chromecast, ezcast, or miracast systems.

Chromecast basically lets you send whatever you have in a chrome browser to it, and display on the screen its plugged into. It powers of usb and costs about $40. You can get browser plugins for chrome that let you send ur .avi files and other video files to the chrome cast thru the chrome browser.

ezcast has the same features as chromecast and apple tv and miracast from what ive heard, and is a cheaper alternative, but apparently not as fast.

Thanks for all that its a lot to digest but very helpful. We are just working through the settlement process now once we get the place and get settled Im going to look into what you are suggesting.

I have the chromecast the problem is it does not pick up my VPN when trying to stream to the TV. Im going to attempt to setup a virtual wireless network based on some guides I have come across and see if I can get the Chromecast to use that so it sees the VPN connection.

I assume you can do a stream to the machine. Eg set up a small PC in the living room which can remote to the desktop or "stream box" Maybe a Raspberry pi is more than good enough.

I hate leaving things undone too...

No update as yet. We are still unpacking and have not even setup my PC.

Will update it once its solved. However with Netflix changing its policy it might not be worth it.
