I am considering building a new desktop. I want to go simpler and smaller this time. Currently have an i5 2500k. I can't decide if I should go Skylake or Devil's Canyon.
Would probably want to do do some minor OC'ing, nothing extreme. Definitely will be air cooled.
If you will do something that is cpu demanding(multithread/core support) and want to use 3video card go with x99,if you will just play games and you will use 2 video cards go with skylake
What is it you do exactly? For gaming, your CPU still has life left in it, especially if you feed it a healthy over clock. If you are just a gamer, buying a faster GPU would be your ticket.
If you are just an enthusiast who wants a new system "just cuzz", buy a new system. An interesting thing to note is that, in the USA, the 6700K and 5820K are only seperated by $20 or $30 cost. 2 whole extra cores and 7MB of extra L3 cache and 12 extra PCIE lanes for $30 is worth it. Also, there are very decent X99 boards just over $200 and DDR4 is cheap now.
If I was to build a new machine right now I would choose X99 with 5820K.
