I've considered the lower price monitors without gsync and have gone back and forth many times on it.
However, I use a monitor 8+ hours a day, 5 or 6 days a week. My last monitor a Dell 24 IPS ($800 when I bought it), I've had for a decade. So from the cost per hour of use perspective, the additional cost is irrelevant. What is $300 or $400 more if it is truly better over the course of its lifetime?
Well the reason why I recommend him to buy another monitor is cause he wont use those 100hz in most modern games on high settings, he would be far better off buying a none overclocked 34" 21:9 monitor if he really wants the 34" size. Now he wont be able to push this monitor until the release of Pascal, and if he is unlucky that can take a far bit into 2k17.
So basically IMO his monitor is just dead meat for more than a year.
But yeah if you just going to have a GTX 970, a 1080p 144hz is a far better choice.
