You can't really judge this adapter unless someone also shares the TV model they are using to test 4:4:4 with the adapter.

Also to get 4:4:4 at 30hz 4K there is a setting that you have to change on TV to put it in PC mode or something like that, can't remember.

I was thinking maybe the same thing, but I found a 223 page manual online for my TV (funny, I think the manual that came in the box was like 10 pages).

The manual says

So, the TV definitely supports it, but I won't be seeing 4:4:4 until I can get UHD color mode to work. I read a review that said UHD color mode worked on another guy's Samsung with this adapter. I also read another review that said he emailed support and they sent him a firmware update for the adapter. I googled and couldn't find any kind of firmware, and their website is down, so I'm out of luck atm. If anybody knows Club3d's support email, that'd help.

I have a Samsung 4K that I can test with one of my AMD crossfire setups as soon as i get an adapter.

Your Sony doesn't seem to support 4:4:4 at 60Hz due to apparent HDMI1.4 mod chipset on its Main Board marketed as HDMI2.0. Can you see 4:4:4 at 30Hz normally?

If you see both 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 on MadVR Chroma test, your display or Windows or picture viewer aren't set at 100% scale, or the Sony does extra image processing (sharpening) due to either not being in PC Mode, or no corresponding to PC mode port type, Color, Sharpness (usually 0 value for most TVs in PC Mode, google yours) or other settings selected in its on-screen menu.

As to DP1.2 port behaving differently with active and passive adapters, its normal. When a passive adapter is hooked to it, DP1.2 switches to HDMI1.4 out mode, since DP1.2 standard in contrast with DP1.3 doesn't support HDMI2.0 and HDCP 2.2 Out modes. So HDMI1.4 signal from GPU is just passed through to a TV. When an active HDMI adapter is hooked to DP1.2, the port remains in DP Out mode, and your TV is getting signal from the adapter chipset, so available modes totally depend on the chipset Out signal, its color processing, and handshake with your TV. It might be the adapter chipset limitations result in making worse the pic artifacts you posted, or its firmware needs more work.

I can confirm this, yes, but only back when I was running Windows 7. The Club3D insists on 60Hz and doesn't even present a 30Hz target; it may be that I could tweak the pixel timings to confirm this, but pre-Crimson, pre-Windows 10 I did run 4:4:4 (per this test) out native HDMI at 4K/30. The 850B had an overspec UHD engine at launch that fell within HDMI 2.0 spec; Sony was well aware it was around the corner. It was enabled via firmware update after the fact. None of the online specifications were updated for the HDMI 2.0 firmware upgrade, so the specs are inaccurate for any post-launch firmware capabilities (none of the spec sheets indicate 4K / 60Hz for example, and clearly that works).

There are plenty of anecdotal reports that 4:4:4 / 4K / 60 is functional on this set (e.g. http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1041171892&postcount=64
), and based on what I've seen-- evidence above vs. 4.2.2 mode on this set, I don't doubt it. But you found the firmware notes that indicate 4:2:0 in this mode, so I'm just left wondering why 4:2:2 looks so bad in comparison, with actual bands of data missing compared to the supposed 4:2:0 mode.

I see lots of complaints online about that particular test, that it doesn't work on confirmed 4:4:4 colorspaces-- but I have no doubt that there is a *lot* of postprocessing on this consumer set that may be interfering.

Very cool, thanks for clearing that up. Yes, I hope the firmware on this adapter can be updated.

The MadVR Chroma Test works very well, unless some scaling setting isn't at 100% (there're several) and/or GPU/TV image postprocessing is on, especially text sharpening. Below are test result photos from different TV sets. This test doesn't allow such ambiguity as Text Chroma Test, so some consumers don't like it due to not allowing to interpret results according to their (at times wrong) product performance expectations. smile.gif

There is a firmware update. Supposedly "enhances EDID reading and compatibility" so we'll see if it helps, I just emailed them.

I was able to get into the website for a brief period, but now it's down again.

Support email is support@club-3d.com

Well, I just did the firmware update. Now UHD Color mode works, but I'm still not getting 4:4:4. It's better than before, but still not 4:4:4. I think now it's 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0 and I really wish DP had the pixel format settings that HDMI does.

The pink chroma test image is still inconclusive with 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 both visible. Doesn't matter if the TV is set to PC mode or not.

The chroma text image looks better, it's more legible, but still not perfect.

So now I'm stumped. Really really wish DP had the pixel format settings like HDMI. Any 3rd party software capable of such things??

I've tried PC and game mode and it doesn't make a difference. I got UHD Color mode to work but it didn't change anything.

I have no other way to input 4k 60hz 4:4:4. DP to HDMI 2.0 is my only option at the moment.

I can confirm 4k@30hz 4:4:4 with HDMI to HDMI or with the DP to HDMI 2.0 adapter, but 60hz 4:4:4 is giving me problems.
