Asus Maximus Gene VIII Z170 MATX - Double Post/Slow Boot Issue

Hey guys,

As the title states, I can't seem to get the right configuration on my sig rig. Symptoms:

- Double Posting
- Blank screen for 20-30 seconds loading Windows
- 30-50 seconds boot from button press
- Fast boot enabled/disabled makes no difference
- Samsung 950 drivers installed, made no difference
- Installed Glary Utilities, for some reason it thinks I am booting up in 21 seconds. This just isn't true.
- Disabled my overclock, makes no difference
- Enabled all 8 cores on startup, made no difference
- Already updated to the latest BIOS, so I'd be downgrading to flash

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I can take pictures of my BIOS config if needs be.

Thanks guys!

I'm positive the RAID controller isn't initialising. I've been through and disabled the ports I'm not using, and disabled the POST for that. Nothing seems to help. It literally takes me an entire minute to boot into windows and for it to become responsive -_- I was expecting more from the Samsung 950 in terms of boot speed, unless I've incorrectly configured it somehow... I've forced it onto UEFI. I can't see what else to do :/!

How about a bare bones test? Unplug everything from your computer except for what is absolutely necessary for it to boot, leaving you with onboard video, 1 stick of RAM, one harddrive, keyboard and mouse, nothing else. This will at least rule out everything other than what I just listed, and the OS.

Just tried the unplugging one stick of RAM, the speakers, the mouse, left the keyboard. - Same issue.

Tried the same as above, with no peripherals - Same issue.

It is basically a blank screen for about 10 seconds before anything even shows on the screen. Then eventually I get the BIOS prompt loading twice, and then it boots windows.

:/ I'm at a loss here. I've tried all kinds in the BIOS now. :/

Just to make sure, in one of your tests above, you took out your video card, right?

Have you tried resetting BIOS, or even updating it?

I cleared the CMOS. Haven't taken out my GPU yet. But I doubt it is that at all.

I think it is because of the drives I have connected.

M.2 / SSD / HDD

If I force UEFI across the board, the HDD won't boot. Everything else will.

If I enable legacy the HDD boots fine.

It still doesn't explain why the screen is blank for a good 10-15 seconds before I even get the option to go into the BIOS. :/. I'll video it and post it.

This could be because your video card is having trouble initializing. It's why I asked you to remove it as part of the testing.

If it is my GPU having trouble initialising, instead of isolating the issue taking it out. WHICH is a nightmare in this tiny case. And the cable management I have in place right now would require me to snip some cable ties, as the extra weight of the card is being pulled up by the power connectors to account for the sag. What can I actually do...?

If you want to rule out your video card as being the problem, you're going to have to remove it. I just has to come out of the PCIe slot and unplugged from the PSU.

As of right now, with what evidence you have presented, I'm leaning towards your GPU as being the problem.

Oh, and your video is set to private.

I have made it public now. Sorry about that. Should be able to view it now.

Also, one thing that may be note-worthy. I have powered my GPU with two separate 6+2 Dual cables, rather than a single 6+2 dual.

Took out my GPU. Made no difference either.

Dammit. Now I'm really stumped!

I've found the setting! I will definitely try this tonight. Excited! XD!

Absolutely no changes with MCR on/off/auto.

I'm out of options now... totally :/! If anything it is even worse than it was.

Since we only need ram & gpu to POST, you can try from there (disconnect all other devices - storage, usb, kb/mouse) to see if double/slow POST still occurs.
If its still slow, either BIOS setting or normal?
If its fast, add 1 device at a time to find culprit.

I've been through all that now. Still slow. I'm leaning towards RAM settings. I've manually configured the timings and frequency to the exact spec of the ram and it seemed to improve boot time by roughly 5-10 seconds. Each time I play around with it, it seems to improve.

Okay I have officially tried every setting of RAM now, every configuration. I can't figure out why this is happening. (see video above)

! It is excruciatingly slow!

Found this review on newegg:

"Cons: Running my 3400 memory on anything other than the stock 2133 setting is highly unstable, if it does boot up. Setting it to XMP does not even POST for me. This seems to be a big problem that many other people are experiencing as well. I am on the latest 0907 bios and still no luck. Seems like this MB has some QC issues.

Manufacturer Response:
Dear Roman,

Thank you for taking your time on writing this review. I am sorry that you are finding stability problems with this motherboard, and the inconvenience it caused you. Is your RAM on the qualified vendor list? Please contact me at cl-justin@asus.com with your system specs, so i can further investigate your problem. Your case # for reference is N151048598"

I get the exact issue with setting XMP settings. Won't post.... Hope I don't have a duff board -_-!!

Got the same issue with a new Maximus VIII Gene 6700k so the problem maybe a BIOS issue. It flashes the ROG screen twice as if it is double posting and take about 30 seconds to get to the Windows screen. This is slow considering my previous Gene V was much faster. My current system is using a m.2 950 pro for the boot drive and integrated Intel graphics. I posted the problem to Asus but no help yet. Bios is current. Any ideas anyone? I've tried a bunch of BIOS changes which did not fix it.

Unfortunately not man, I haven't managed to sort this, I just don't turn my PC off now. I sleep it. As I am fed up of it. XD!

I'll have another faff with it tonight, try a few settings, see if I can improve it.

We have a similar setup, using the M.2. etc... so if I can find a fix, surely it will work for you too! Pretty sure it is an initialisation issue with the HDD's/SSD's.

Add me on steam or something if you have it, and we can try fix it collaboratively if you're game!? Try out different settings.

It is the lightning picture, you should find it straight away.

A long shot, can you try with default non-oc ram speeds at 1.26v instead of 1.20v (but I'm not sure abt MCR on/off or auto).
Just to see if ram voltage is part of the problem or not.

Did you ever find a fix? I have the same board with the same problem here, this is actually my 4th board too, had a sabertooth, hero, another hero, now gene...all takes so long to boot. My Gigabyte Z170N rig boots up in under 10 seconds..bad luck or this is how Asus boards are?

6700K
950 Pro M.2
16gb ram
