Low? I think win10 adoption rate has been pretty amazing. It came out in august and nearly 30% of steam users are running it.

Windows 7 64 bit 35.63%-1.04%
Windows 10 64 bit 28.81%+2.39%
Windows 8.1 64 bit1 6.50%-0.96%

I'd sooner move to Linux in 2020, with all its flaws and insufficiencies, than install Windows 10 unless Microsoft does a 180 on many of their policies, they are completely unacceptable as is.

Also, their spamware tactics to get people to upgrade by hiding and even removing the "No, thanks" option is simply despicable. Windows 10 has a different set of conditions that people should be clearly given the option to read and accept or not. Not giving people the clear option to reject the offer and keep using the current OS that they paid for in one way or another for the entire support period that they are entitled to - 2020 for Windows 7 and 2023 for Windows 8.1 - is unethical and smells of desperation.

On a global note, I don't like control, privacy and advanced aesthetics being taken away in favour of a consolization / tabletization of PCs. Is this the price to pay for "console level efficiency" DX 12 based games? No, thanks.

Uninstalling programs. Sounds to me like we are paying MS for Windows 10 but they get to do whatever they want to it on "our" PC.

You see it everywhere now and not just with software. Coffee machines with DRM. Cars that are made specifically so you can't work on them yourself. EULAs that are becoming more and more obscene. Companies want to sell you a product but have it remain under their complete control. And no one seems to care.

I'm also not an MS hater, I loved DOS, XP, 7 (skipped Vista, LOL) and really loved 8.1, I really want to be able to love 10 but I can't in this state.

Also, I don't own cell phone, I have a dumb TV, use a VPN online, no Facebook or any social media. so none of the usual cop outs for the always "you own a cell phone, somehow that makes it OK for your OS to report everything you do."

Yup, coffee machines with DRM'ed refills. I honestly couldn't believe it when I read about that a few months ago, but it is true.

People hated what such software was doing, to the point that other software, like Lavasoft Adaware and Spybot Search & Destroy, became famous and widespread for chasing Gator and similar software. Gator became so infamous, that had to change its name to Claria, in order to make a fresh start without being stigmatized.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claria_Corporation
Quote:
The "Gator" (also known as Gain AdServer) products collected personal information from its unknowing users, including all websites visited and portions of credit card numbers[2] to target and display ads on the computers of web surfers. It billed itself as the "leader in online behavioral marketing".

^ Poor Gator wasn't even getting "unique hardware ID". It only wanted your data. But, one may protest, "it was getting credit card portion number!". Nah, only the first 4 digits, just to see if you use Visa or Mastercard or whatever bank had issued your card. Just to bring you the best ads and without being able to retrace your hardware. And still, no love for Gator. Not a single soul would defend poor Gator... People soon learnt to make a horrified face as soon as they were seeing an installer with a shy crocodile image on them. Poor Gator...

It is no coincidence that Microsoft first saw the "benign" side of Gator:
Quote:
In July 2005, Microsoft Corporation came under fire when it revealed that their anti-spyware product would no longer quarantine Claria software as "spyware" (though it still offered users the option to remove the software). Microsoft was reportedly contemplating the purchase of Claria, which many consumers felt to be a conflict of interest.[16] Other spyware-reporting agencies, such as Computer Associates and Panda Software's TruPrevent Technologies, still label Claria products as both adware and spyware.

If only Gator had thought to do it the Microsoft way! A true pioneer of the sector, but alas, had no directX 12 cheese to give to the user... biggrin.gif

O tempora o mores!

Morale of the story: If you want to make a human being do something, you must not force it to him. "You must love Big Brother". Instead, you must serve him something "advantageous" and then he will accept what he previously wouldn't. Not much different than a mouse and a trap or a Pavlov's dog. Would the mouse enter the trap, had it not been for the cheese? No. Would a dog care about a bell ringing, had it not been for the food accompanying it? No. Humans are animals just like others. They just have to be presented with a more complex way, but the method is the same.

"You must love Big Brother. It is not enough to obey him: you must love him.' "

http://www.george-orwell.org/1984/20.html

EDIT: In memory of the shy Gator. The most loathed innocent animal in internet history:

People hated you, because you didn't have directX. RIP. Microsoft vindicated your memory!

Rep+

Thanks for that info and the spot on insight. I didn't remember that from back then.

Fair enough, globally, 12% for win10 vs 48% for win7. I still think that's not a bad showing for an aug 2015 launch.

I would like to upgrade but have a few questions.
1) Can i disable driver enforcement in win 10. i has some legacy hardware(joysticks and programmable volume knobs).
2) Does scp drivers for ds3 work in win 10.
3) Can i upgrade from windows 8 directly. because last time it tried to upgrade itself got blue screen and restored itself to windows 8 again(thank you). maybe i need to update to windows 8.1.

It is pretty bad since it is free and product is much hotter in few one or two months, then cool down a lot.

More than 30% of steam is playing bejeweled on a laptop so that makes sense.

in general i gave up on privacy ...... you cannot escape it - soon as your born, hospitals, councils, banks and so on have a record on you, then employer's and all this before you buy any computer, gadget...
So i tend to try and not moan...,. tongue.gif

Unless your going to be a hermit, then you will have to live with it. Look at the world today - middle east is biting our backsides, we need all the spying more than ever redface.gif

This data shows windows 10 market share is 9 percents for this month and worse than windows 8 and 8.1 together
