You saved me from having to RMA my CPU and motherboard. THANKS DUDE!!!

Yeah Moisiss! You saved the day +REP thumb.gif

So you don't have to spend an eternity finding the optimal settings for your chip; like I did tongue.gif
You can speed up the process by setting the Vcore to the highest setting you're comfortable with (I didn't want to go above 1.3V, but for this specific board I would aim for 1.280. Because you don't know if the CPU will draw more that and since you have no way of measuring the Vcore... You would never know if it was pulling 1.5V like mine did once) and then crank the multiplier to say... 4.5GHz - If it crashes; lower the the multi by 1 step (100MHz) until you can boot into Windows.

Then use the AIDA64 burn test to find stability by either lowering the multi or raising voltage. AIDA64 was the ONLY program that could bring a BSOD. LinX was fun for finding general settings. ROG bench passed an all-night run and I could fold for 6+ hours before crashing (really annoying to lose sooo many 95%+ WU's). But with AIDA64... BSOD's were usually within 5 minutes.

If you have BF4; play a couple rounds on a large 64 player map like Golmud Railway (on Windows 8.1. You WILL lag on Windows 7). I was BSOD'ing at 4.4GHz @ 1.276V on BF4 when those settings were AIDA64 stable on a Z97 board. Dropped down to 4.3GHz @ 1.270V and it has been stable since.

Microcode update that disables OCing? So Intel purposely teamed up with Microsoft to screw over G3258 owners? :O

Yep. Makes no sense as Microsoft doesn't have a dog in the ring. Only reason I could think of why they would pull a stunt like that - is to kill OC'ing for the more... Non-tech minded folk. People like you and me (and near everyone else on this forum) would look for information as to why we couldn't OC and are crashing. Your regular consumer idjit would just scream that their PC was broken and blame MS tongue.gif

Haha, I'm doing the exact opposite. I set the CPU voltage at the lowest I thought was reasonable, and bumped it up by 0.025 to 0.05 every time it crashed. My last crash was at 4.0GHz and 1.12v core. Right now, I'm at 4.0GHz and 1.15v core and currently running Prime95. I'll consider it stable if I last 4 hours.

Right now, it gets to around 68'C-70'C running Prime 95 with the side panel off on the Intel stock cooler.

My G3258 will be a purely HTPC rig for emulators + movies. I have my main gaming rig with a Sandy Bridge quad for BF4/Crysis/intense PC gaming. thumb.gif

Well, when I finally discovered that it was the Windows update that was killing G3258 CPUs, I was on the verge of screaming and cursing Microsoft's name. mad.gif

If you're concerned about heat; I had this quote from another forum saved for future personal reference, you may be interested.
Quote:
What you may want to explore is other tests utilizing the AVX2 instruction set as this is the cause of the extreme heat on Haswell with the newer prime95. Alternatives for lower heat tests are prime95 version 26.6. If you want AVX ( but not AVX2) you can use prime95 27.7 or 27.9. These give you prime95 stability without the insane heat for the platform.

That's good. I was near tears when I couldn't figure out why BF4 was hitching, while it seemed like everyone else in the world with lower clocked G3258's was happily gaming with no problems. Until another member on here suggested Windows 8. biggrin.gif

MS isn't being very consumer friendly these days. Just wait until you get the Windows 10 nag update... They keep changing the bloody update number, so if you hide the update - The new code will just appear in it's place. Rinse and repeat. *tinfoil hat on* I personally believe that's the reason why Win10's market share increased. People had their updates set to auto DL and install and Windows 10 waltzed on in with no user input.

I see - so the current versions of Prime95 cause more heat for the G3258s than usual? Interesting...I guess I have nothing to worry about then. It's weird that BF4 runs better in W8 than in W7 - is this for the G3258s and Haswell generation only?

As for the Windows 10 nag updates - haha, pretty much. My gf installed W10 over W7 because she was tired of that nagging W10 update symbol that kept popping up.

Yes on the more heat. Not really a worry though; just lets us see how well the stock cooler can perform when the chip is trying to spontaneously combust beneath it.

I'm thinking it's more of a Dual-core/windows 7 issue. BF4 was optimized for Windows 8 IIRC. There's just enough of an overhead reduction in 8 vs 7 to give a smoother experience. I've played it on a 4690K and there were no issues.
Hopefully I can play it again on a i5... If the cyber Monday Z87 mobo that I ordered for my black Friday i5 and RAM ever leaves the shipping dock /headdesk lachen.gif

Ah, I see. Newegg? Amazon? Are you having it shipped via cargo freight from China? tongue.gif

Newegg for the i5 and RAM. I'm guessing that the city I'm in had enough orders placed, that it was air shipped as it arrived in 2 days.

NCIX for the board. It's an ASUS Z87-PRO. Only 1 left in stock when I ordered. NCIX declined a few price matches and didn't respond to my email in 2 days. So I phoned them and after removing the declined price-matches; the motherboard was sold out. Then had to wait a week for more to come in stock (just my luck when ordering an EOL clearance item). AND NOW... Since it's being shipped from Markham Ontario. It's leaving the shipping hub in Toronto and since Toronto just freakin' SHUTS DOWN - when more than 5 snowflakes are spotted. It's been stuck in limbo for the last 3 days "Until the weather clears"

So yeah... Murphy loooves me tongue.gif

Haha, good luck man. I'd hate to see all my Xmas gifts delayed. thumb.gif

Hehe, thanks.

I'm off to bed now. Good luck with the overclock and please give us an update when you find your stable speed/voltage smile.gif
