[HWBot] Unlocked BCLK for All Skylake CPUs by ASUS and ASRock - Page 4

on the other hand, its not like people would buy an i3 over an i5, people still want that true 4core performance advantage, since hyperthreading is unreliable.
plus if overclocking can promote i3 sales then they could just ramp up the production of 2C/ dies.

Because they can force us all to buy at least an top end i5 and pay an extra  for the privilege.

BIOS update unless Intel forced an arbitrary hardware change so we cannot unlock it ever afaik. Even if they don't I wouldn't put it past ASRock to make a Xeon compatible board that still OCs if its possible, they tend to go for niches (eg. Board that had AMDs sockets 754 and 939 to enable a slow upgrade, recent Socket 939 board with a AMD 700 series chipset, etc) like that simply because while they know there only maybe a few thousand sales tops, those sales will be all theirs because the other companies usually don't bother. That 785G 939 board would likely be the board of choice for most people repairing a 939 system because it has way more features than the last NF4s and the like originally around when 939 was popular and still runs pretty well.

I'm sure that by now Intel has analyzed the consequences of their handling of the "G3258 overclocking on non-Z motherboards" situation and are formulating a response (or lack thereof) accordingly.

Exactly, it would literally take one configuration change that may not even be in hardware to release a K edition Pentium or i3. If Zen provides trouble to them it'll likely be in that price range and with everything else already launched, Intel could likely have a new k edition SKU i3 launched in less than a month from when they make the decision to build it.

This is a very interesting development, I don't think I have been this excited about a feature since I discovered you could alter the FSB on certain "super" socket 7 motherboards via jumpers back in the day and gain up to a 50% performance bump on your K6 or pentium MMX CPUs.

This "feature" has been around for a little while now and as yet it does not seem that intel has issued any cease and desists. There have been some very plausible theories in this thread regarding why this might be the case. While I don't think intel are worried about Zen I do think that allowing BCLK overclocking will win them some points as well as a sizable boost in sales. There are a lot of people either unwilling to upgrade from Haswell and Ivy or not able to justify the cost of a K CPU and news like this may well be just the incentive they need to make the switch to Skylake. The thing is, these are not potential sales unless BCLK overclocking persists, if intel locks this down then these sales will evaporate into the ether and likely result in all the "potentials" holding on for the next generation of CPUs or worse (for intel) Zen. With Zen just around the corner, intel will have to be careful how they handle this. So far as I know all, or at least almost all of ASRock's Z170 boards support "Sky OC" for non-K CPUs. If this feature (from other manufacturers as well as ASRock) were to filter down to the B and H chipsets it will result in a lot of sales for both intel and motherboard vendors as it will open up performance gains across the board that will hugely appeal to budget builders, gamers and professionals alike.

So, can someone point me to the cheapest motherboard capable of overclocking a skylake i3?

There is the ASRock Z170A-X1/3.1 for +/- $100 that lists SKY-OC and comes with an Assassin's Creed Syndicate code.

I heard about this ages ago. It's an extra plus for non K chips but still doesn't give the full range of OC options for K chips. IMO Intel know exactly what they are doing here and would be fully aware some M/B makers will offer the non K OC options, they did design the chips and would know this is an option. I don't think Intel will change or block the non K OC as if they wanted to do that they wouldn't have made it an option in the first place. Maybe they think they can get higher sales of Skylake with this option and I think it makes sense my 2c.

The non K OC does have some limitations worth mentioning.
Quote:
Turbo Boost and C-State are disabled with SKY OC is applied. The company also explained that the integrated Intel graphics has to be disabled as well

Seems to be yes. Pity I was looking forward to picking up a non-Z board with Sky OC and putting it through it's paces. It looks like it won't happen now thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif
