SSD performance problem

Thread Starter
Hi everyone,

my ssd raid 0 used as my system drive started performing much worse in CDM and Atto benchmarks since I made few changes to my computer.
I recently flashed my motherboard's bios to a newer version (2012 to 3003) and switched to UEFI from legacy BIOS (also changed my system drive from MBR to GPT). I also created a new raid array using 16 KB stripe size (was using something higher before) after secure erasing both SSD's. I finally performed a clean install of windows 10 Pro x64 and installed latest IRST drivers and software to enable write back caching.

My BIOS contains so many settings I'm not sure if I was able to change all the settings to their initial value (before flash), but it should be close unless I forgot something major and didn't notice it yet, but I doubt so.

Lets compare before and after all those changes with CDM benchmark.

As you can see there's deterioration pretty much everywhere, but mostly in sequential reads.

Also take note since my first move to Windows 10, I've noticed MUCH higher shutdown/restart times for some reason. I also noticed a warning is created pretty much everytime I shut down the computer in the event viewer diagnosis. Usually takes 20-30 seconds to shutdown while it takes under 20 seconds to cold boot. This is an unrelated issue though because it was the case before all the mentioned changes.

Hope you guys have some interesting suggestions for me smile.gif.

Thank you.

Alex

Just want to add I have tried disabling C-states and EIST and it doesn't change anything.

I wonder if stripe size alone could be responsible for such a big performance drop...

Noone has any suggestions ? I really don't know if it's worth starting from scratch again just to change stripe size...

Please someone help me look into this issue I'd really appreciate since I don't have enough knowledge to fix it myself.

I'm pretty surprised nobody has any suggestion or advice to help me find out why my drives are having such a noticeable performance drop.

My only idea so far is to change the stripe size of my RAID once again for a higher value, but I don't want to perform yet another full install of my system if I don't really have to.

use 128kb stripe size. its the default i think.
you will see the perf improvements.

smaller stripe size is good for increasing performance when working with small files.
larger stripe size is good for sequencial performance.
chose whichever suits you better.

Sorry can't help but.... the classical end user "bug"

It was working fine, so you started changing stuff... and now it's broke smile.gif

PC TIP: don't fix it if it ain't broke!!!

But I know the feeling... newer driver/bios... gotta try it tongue.gif

Thank you very much for your quick answer, I read in few places that stripe size doesn't affect performance that much, but I think it was on much newer SSD's than mine.

I'll definitely change the strip size when I have some free time to do it. I think I was at 128KB before, but I wonder which size is best for real world use (gaming, web browsing and occasionally using software like Matlab, AutoCAD, etc).

he changed stripe size. the only reason for his sequencial performance drop

oh and i don't know why everyone secure erases their ssd. you don't need to do it. just quick format is all that's needed.

only do it when you need to sell it or want to make sure all sensitive data is permanently erased.

Thanks again, I won't secure erase them again. What stripe size would you recommend for casual use ?
