From the Youtube video I've seen it's meant to be a reasonable DAC/AMP for the money, I'm going to be driving some Sennheiser HD518's with it, I'm currently using my onboard (MSI x99a Gaming 7) and find the audio very quiet when using the headphones, surely this would be better than onboard.

Has anyone had and hands on experience which cheaper Chinese DAC's or this one in particular?

Thanks

It is available on amazon here. it seems the max impedance is 32 Ω. You're 518's are 50 Ω. Youtube review

Ah crap I forgot about that..lol
Well looks like I have to keep looking, or maybe a headphone amp.

I have a Xonar DGX which seems to drive them ok (a lot louder than the onboard), but the audio sounds horrible.

I came across this:

SMSL M6 384KHZ/32Bit DAC+Headphone Amplifier All-in-One Optic/Coaxial/USB

USB: 16bit-32bit/32kHz-384kHz

OPTIC / COAXIAL:16bit-24bit/32kHz-192kHz

Parameters:
USB Input: 16bit-32bit / 32kHz-384kHz (asynchronous)
Optical/Coaxial: 16bit-24bit / 32kHz-192kHz
RCA Output Level: 2Vrms
THD + N: <0.003%
Dynamic Range:> 115dB
SNR:> 120dB
Channel separation:> 110dB

Headphone Amp power: (@ 1% THD + N)
32Ω 130mW
64Ω 270mW
150Ω 220mW
300Ω 120mW
Amp distortion: 0.003%@10mW 300Ω

And why is your reaction to spend even more money instead of realizing that all the audiophiles here are actually audiofools? They have long claimed that even the Xonar DG would transform your audio world, but you clearly hear that they are wrong.

I went with the $90AU/$65US SMSL SD-793II DAC/AMP, after further research and speaking to actual owners, they will indeed drive 50ohms headphones it's just not listed on the specs.
One had the same HD518's and only needed 1/2 volume to have a good volume, anything over is uncomfortable.

My DGX sounded crappy because a day after posting that it died, had it for a while now (got to get something for the HTPC now as it doesn't have onboard optical out..)

Ok the SMSL SD-793II DAC/AMP showed up.
All I got to say is WOW, yes there is a noticeable difference in sound quality than onboard.
And does this thing drive these HD518's, I can't even get 1/2 way before it hurts.

I was seriously impressed that SMSL include a different power adapter for Australia, their eBay ad didn't say anything about that so they really didn't have to do it.

There's no noise at all at full volume with a track of dead silence even when adjusting the volume

I know it will be blown out of the water by higher grade Audio DAC's but for a $90 home use DAC/AMP I'm seriously impressed, its better than the $200 Audioengine D1 I sold a while ago.
It doesn't control the RCA output volume like the D1, but the power logitech speaks have their own volume nob anyway.
It does only accept the maximum of 24bit/96000Hz like the ad stated, but that's more than enough for home use.

But you are all right, that DAC/AMP definitely found the flaws in the HD518's, though they sound 100% better than before, it's made it easier to hear where they are lacking.

This is a pic of it under my 27" Benq monitor, fits perfectly.
