Swan Song Build Log (I7-5960K / 32GB / MSI X99 Godlike / M2 / Intel 750 / Dual 980ti) - Page 2

I'd always go Asus for motherboards. For the memory go with the Dominator Platinum. Theyre so versatile for modding. Painting the metal strips to changing the acrylic strips to change the Led colors. I just had some and the overclocking was great, stable too. P_20151123_221000.jpg 1282k .jpg file

Made some small changes and ordered some things, I bit the bullet on the ram although I totally forgot the heat sinks are red lol. Oh well, I'll live, as long as it's showing that it's an approved set of memory with an xmp profile that's been tested. 32gigs at 3000

So I got this stuff in last night, I've been doing a lot of reading on ram and since I had things narrowed down to two motherboards and getting really caught up in just how fast DDR4 can be clocked, I decided to just stick with my original goal of 3000, if it runs at that speed with the verified XMP profile then I'll be stoked, if not, it's not a huge L and will still provide plenty of power for my rig.

I got the cooler in place, I don't feel like the fans need to be sitting directly on the radiator as long as they're blowing air through it so I'm not going to jump the gun and mount any of the fans that came with it elsewhere until I have an idea of how hot this thing is going to run.

So far it looks like we have plenty of space inside of here especially with that pesky drive cage gone, maybe I can have someone fab up some kind of cover for the psu so I don't go ripping off the oem stickers in case there is a failure and it can cover some of the power cables running to the back of the case.

Really have a boner for that msi godlike carbon.

Also did anyone else fall victim to that customer appreciation sale on the Razer website, I think it's still running until 5-6pm today. Picked up a new diamondback mouse mainly to match with my razer chroma keyboard. Plus I needed a legit mouse mat.

Wanted to put a little video together but not going to happen with my work machine frown.gif

Alright, ordered the MSI X99 gaming godlike and made a trip to the not so local microcenter, got some really good deals.

Some updates!

I really wanted to hold out for the Godlike Carbon, but the more I thought about it, the graphics cards are black and red, the memory is hella red, why fight it. I know everyone else is sick of black and red pc builds but quite frankly this thing literally is going to be hung from my desk. It's not a car lol!

The OC Genie gave the chip a decent overclock and I got the memory to run at it's default XMP profile with no fuss whatsoever. I'm going to have to go to newegg and write a pretty nice review of the motherboard, a lot of people complained about doa boards, and just sticking to their asus guns. I'm glad I decided to take the leap even though it was a more financially irresponsible one. tongue.gif

Intel Core i7-5960X CPU @ 4200.0MHz - 2149 XTU marks on HWBOT

So I got the machine all together and running for the most part to play around with overclocking. I'm looking for something stable and will constantly boot, while 4.2 was pretty cool, I noticed some stability issues with it, mainly just random shut off's and not being able to post for like 10 minutes afterwards. 3.8 with the mem at 3000 seems to be a sweet spot and is super consistent. I can reboot it all day without any issues.

I'm not a huge overclocking guy, and this is the first system I've ever done it with. The idle temps of the cpu are a little up there, but the case was sitting open instead of closed so the air pressure could build from the intake fans. I don't have an exhaust fan on the case currently but I think I'm going to put on near the bottom of the case so air blows out through the bottom as well.

Primary drive - samsung 950pro m.2 512GB

Secondary drive - Intel 750 800GB PCIe NVME

The secondary drive literally is just going to be used for video games and rendering in premiere and photoshop. I'll slap my Samsung 850 evo in the back of the machine just to have another disk, but most of my storage is going to be nas based so not a lot of things will be stored on this computer.

when you get balls deep into tearing your system apart to install your new bad ass sleeved cable only to realize this is an EVGA kit and not a Corsair AX, HX kit and those are all sold out.
