The VR Gaming Thread

2016 will undoubtedly be the Year VR becomes mainstream and thus people actually knowing that VR stands for Virtual Reality and not think its some sort of disease. I have been to many expos and talked to many people about VR and found only a few had tried it and a lot didn't even know what it was. For many they see the sky mask designed headset and see another gimmick that will add nothing to there everyday life. Its another toy that wont get used after the first time, it will collect dust. But once these people tried it they were instantly converted! They were believers, just like Mark Zuckerberg said I must own this after his first try of the oculus rift dk1.
For me this will and is the biggest thing to happen to gaming since....well, ever! The first time I played Elite Dangerous with the Oculus Rift DK2 it was for 16 hours straight. I didnt take the headset off my head. I was using the x55 Rhino Hotas Joystick and throttle and it gave me complete Immersion! Bening able to look out the back of my cockpit to locate an enemy was life like.
I cant wait to see all the games come out this year and to finally have a consumer product to use. I hope plug and play is improved dramatically even though Nvidia and AMD have been trying hard from their end.

So please feel free to share any VR gaming info, help, thoughts, opinions etcs. And hopefully we can have a little community here to help each other and share our VR gaming experiences.

VR Headsets
Oculus Rift - PreOrder Jan 6th 8am PST - Release Date: 1st Quarter 2016

Oculus Touch Controllers - Available 2nd Half 2016!

HTC Vive - Sometime April 2016
http://www.htcvive.com/us/

3rd Party Controllers
Sixence Stem - Realease TBA?
http://sixense.com/wireless

Virtuix Omni - Pre-Orders being posted now!

Racing wheels & Joysticks
Logitech G920
This racing wheel is plug and play with Project cars and Oculus Rift DK2. Only issue I had was sometimes your view can be a little far back or too high. But with some Oculus IR camera adjustments and in game settings tweaks your fine.

x55 Rhino Joystick/Flightstick
My favourite experience that is available now is pairing the x55 Rhino Joystick and throttle with the Oculus Rift and Elite Dangerous. If you position your joystick in real world similar to in game world you will get a real sense of immersion. Its uncanny! I love looking at the holographic heads up displays like maps etc. You really do feel like your in a modern space craft.

I cant wait for the OR to come out. Any guesses on the price? I can remember using a VR machine at a local mall in the early 90s. What fun. It will be cool to see how far they've come. Thanks for starting the thread.

Great minds think a like. Was just thinking that OCN needed such thread.

Hopefully this thread can guide me on the ultimate decision. HTC or Oculus.

With Oculus Touch controllers getting a last minute revamp and thus causing them to be pushed back it becomes a no brainer for me that the HTC Vive wins out.

I love the ability to use my hands in game! FPS games will be so boring once a decent shooter comes out. Half Life 3 will be awesome! Heck Half Life 2 is awesome and it was made like 10 years before VR even reared its modern head!

Star Citizen will be good. So will Project Cars, EVE: Valkyrie, Assetto Corsa, Doom.

Some of these are already out but will be a lot better with a Consumer VR Headset and dedicated controllers. Once the dust settles after release of all the VR Headsets and Peripherals then we will see the AAA game developers take over from the Indie Developers.
I cant wait to use the Virtuix Omni with some open world game or a game like Doom. LOL we are very lucky to be living in a time to see all this come fruition.

What I am really really worried are the exclusive deals. The market will be thin and by making exclusive games to Oculus or Hive it might get tinner.

I think it will be more of an issue with PSVR vs PCVR. Most developers are developing for all headsets.

I'm looking forward to VR as well but I have never gotten a chance to try it. I did get the 3D effect from watching VR videos on the phone with it healed close to my eyes, so I can see how it would be a cool experience with a proper setup.

Right now I'm still trying to decide weather to jump on the Rift preorder when it goes live, or hold off for the Vive. The Vive playroom thing where you walk around doesn't interest me at all. I have no room in my house for such a thing and see no games ever developed for it besides tech demos. The headset looks quite uncomfortable compared to the Rift CV1 design. The Rift ergonomics look much more refined and comfortable than the Vive which is important to me for endurance racing games. Plus every rumor out there says it will cost hundreds more than the Rift. On the other hand, the Rift will come with useless things such as headphones and Xbox One controller, which I already have. So there will be an easy $60 wasted on unused parts If i went with the rift. But I can't help but feel the Rift will end up having better game support and community acceptance over the vive given the speculated prices and the fact the Rift is already out there in mass for game devs to use.

I would mostly be using it for Project Cars and Dirt Rally. Then trying out the improvised VR solutions for other games such as Skyrim, Fallout 4, and F1 2013. I already have Thrustmaster TX with T3PA-Pro pedals, TH8A shifter, and all the wheel addons. So racing games are already quite immersive and I think a VR headset would complete the experience.

3Dvision had a great community where people fixed 3D for many games where developer did not care much.

I am hoping same, or even better community for VR.

Really would kill for Fallout 4 VR experience.

I hope game developers (atleast the good ones) are not investing too much time into VR.
So far it seems like the big ones are waiting on how VR shapes up to be. There is not a real AAA VR games announced (maybe Ace Combat 7? maybe). Most VR games have a fail-safe anyways releasing "normal" versions of the game alongside the VR version / VR being optional.

I don't know a single person (real life) who is excited about VR. Even people I play games with online don't care about it.

Recent news aren't good aswell. Delays, high prices, external modules to power the hardware, big clunky glasses/headwear etc.

I still don't understand the push for VR. We currently have hardware that is barely strong enough for 1080p and in most cases not even that (Xbox One). And now we add a device that needs 2 monitors with a very high framerate to be enjoyable. Moreover VR adds another layer of complexity to the game and the design of it. Most games are so generic that they wouldn't benefit from VR in the slightest and if they really bring a game that shines in VR and implements the VR features in a nice/cool/fresh/innovative way then the game is going to lack depth and substance on its own.

My prediction :

VR won't live up to the hype (which is mostly spread by the manufactures and news sites). It will sell pretty badly and the games will be entertaining for the first 20 minutes and then become boring. I just don't see people sitting with those huge headwear things and completely shutting off reality. Some people are going to buy it and then 1 month later they are probably going to put it in the same box where Google glasses, selfie sticks, Apple watch and Xbox Kinect is

Maybe in the future when the headwear is not as clunky and we can only wear contact lenses or normal glasses to enjoy VR.

VR is sick. I cant wait for consumer products to hit the market!

Its pretty sad ControlVR have basically folded. I backed with their Kickstarter, but I guess they were too slow to get it off the ground and were only fishing for a big fish to buy them up. In the end who wants to put on and wear a suit thing whilst gaming or inside virtual reality doing other stuff. I think the Omni is boarder line acceptable with its harness and shoe system, also not to forget its sheer footprint!

The Sixense Stem potentially could be great depending on compatibility with games. Like I have the Delta Six and although it claims to be a VR gun its no good. But with the Stem I could just strap a sensor pod to allow functional tracking and use the buttons on the gun as normal.

Delta Six

VR UPDATE:
The Oculus Touch Controllers WONT ship with Oculus Rift on Release Day!
ETA - 2nd half 2016!!

Because that's why...

It's from a pearl jam video. From 1999. Shut-up.
I don't think fun has an upper limit, does it?
I'm in my late 30s and I see no reason not to be excited about VR.

Maybe VR for gaming doesn't excite some but VR for other purposes will. Imagine training fire fighters without having to expose them to the hazards of an actual fire? What about seeing your custom designed home in VR where you can walk around and make modification on the fly and see how they look straight away. What about taking a class room of kids to see Petra or Antarctica without leaving the class room. What r about watching a new release film from your own house.

I see no end for VR. The only limitations is our imagination!

I'm actually also in my late 30s. I posted the picture as warning of how some of us may end up. Probably i will end up looking exactly like that. Yep. Me in 20 years. The world doesn't have enough vices ya see. Lets invent another one. Note to self: don't buy a VR headset.

Also, hatlesschimp, you really make me feel old. Everything you just said about VR was said...about VR in ~1997. And also CD-ROM in ~1991. And the web/internet in ~1996. And the iPad in ~2011. But yes, I'm sure this time technology with fix everything and this time it will be different. Google cardboard could do some of this that stuff. I think.

I don't think I saw a mention of MS Hololense. That I might actually be interested in. Unless I have to buy an xbone to use. Then forget about it. Even if not I will probably have to buy a new PC. Gen 1 of MS products always suck anyway. I'm sure I'll have a new PC by hololense v3.

The Hololens needs a bit more work. Good concept though and should have more practical uses than gaming in the future.

I grew up with Commodore 64, Attari 2600 and a ton of games that could be bought at flee markets second hand. Some how missed the NES and got a Sega Master System lol. First PC was a IBM 486.

I remember in high school I borrowed my mums mobile phone for the day and it was a Nokia 918 and remember saying to a friend one day we will have a colour screen and be able to watch TV. Not a bad prophercy for 1996 or round then LOL. Imagine what 2030 will be like for tech!

I considered it for a minute but declined to preorder. $600 is more than I had planned on spending, even though I think it is still a semi-fair price.

I'm going to hold out and see what the next couple of months brings.

I bought my DK2 at the end of March 2014, and have been using it since I got in in August 2014. I pre-ordered the CV1 5 minutes after the pre-sale went up. Yes, it's pricey, but I believe that it will be worth it, at least to me. I loved the experience I got with my DK2, and used the heck out of it. Once actual games start coming out for the CV1, with all it's improvements, I foresee myself spending lots of time with it on.

As gets stated over and over, until you actually are able to put an HMD on and use it, it's very difficult to make an educated decision as to whether you'd like it or not. It doesn't translate well via vids and words at all.

Also, the pre-order doesn't force you to purchase the Rift if you decide between now and the time it ships you don't want it, so I'd rather have my pre-order in now (was able to get a March ship date), and if the Vive brings more/better things to the table, then I'll cancel my Rift pre-order. I believe the Vive is going to cost more than the Rift though, and the Rift will meet my needs quite well.

Question guys... Do you believe Oculus or Vive release a new headset every year with better resolution and specs? Or do you believe new versions to come out every 3 years or so?

#25 ·
Palmer has simply said that "they will support the Rift for it's lifetime", so it's about as vague as could be. I also think they have made mention of it being similar to a cell phone, so I personally think they'll release a new one every 2ish years. Sounds like it could be yearly though. I believe it was just over a year between the DK1 and DK2. And the DK2 was available for pre-order March of 2014, and the first units were out to people around July, so about 1 1/2 years from DK2 to CV1.

I'm not too fussed about the price but I'd rather not order it knowing that part of the price went towards an Xbox One controller that I will not use. I feel I best wait until I can buy it on its own. People have been telling me to look into the HTC Vive instead, I don't know. I only want a 3D VR experience with head-tracking, for Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, Project CARS, etc. Maybe some FPS games as well?
