Unless I upgrade the board I'm maxed at Thuban 6 core. I have early revision board gigabyte didnt do bios update for zambezi/vishera.... Plan to get a Thuban x6 if I can and wait for Zen when I have enough for a new build.

Got a 955 BE c3. Hoping it clocks as well as the 555 unlocked to B55 x4 did. The B55 was capable of 4ghz but the heat was a lot for my old H50 so I settled at 3.8

Gonna be using big air now, bought a Deepcool Lucifer v2, so hoping temps wont be a big issue. Fingers crossed for a good clocker. I may end up lapping the IHS as its got a few scuffs and the beautiful mirror finish on the Lucifer v2 makes me want to match it lol

955 should do 3.8 and 965 should do 4.0, beyond that depends on silicon lottery.

I'd be fine with 3.8 as long as volts are good. My old chip needed 1.48 for rghz but 1.42 for 3.8ghz and temps were 62C at 4ghz but 52C at 3.8ghz so I found 3.8 to be my sweet spot.

I'm sure the Lucifer v2 can stay much cooler than the H50 but I still dont wanna push volts too far.

It's weird that your Phenom B55 x4 @ 3.3GHz performed better than a G3220. Clock per clock, Haswells are almost 50% faster than Core2s and Phenom IIs. I've seen benchmarks where the dual core Haswell Pentium series performed better than overclocked Core2Quads (Core2s are clock for clock equal to or slightly better than the Phenom IIs).

I've read that PS2 mainly runs on two cores too - so I'm guessing it's a poor optimization issue for newer dual cores?

Quad core is better for modern OS.

My B55 never chocked out on browsing, the g3220 was unbearable... Gaming on the G3220 was a nightmare as well. Reminded me of when i had a HD4670 GPU.

Do you think you got a bad chip (or throttling, etc)? Or poor coding/optimization?

Games like Far Cry 4 initially required quad cores to make up for their poor coding/poor distribution of CPU loads.

The Dual Core Pentium Haswells do pretty well in decently threaded games that take advantage of quad cores too - eg. BF4

No clue... 99% of my gaming these days is Planetside 2 which seems to be CPU heavy IIRC.
