Exactly.

What is troubling is that they did change the terms this month for Skylake systems and upcoming Kaby Lake and AMD's Bristol Ridge (and beyond), especially with Windows 8.1, which is still under mainstream support until January 9, 2018, and should thus be getting platform support for those. See under "Support Policy Updates for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Customers".

They won't touch support for Broadwell and below though.

Going by their current terms, it's actually safer for people on older systems to stay with the OS they have, 7 or 8.1, because Microsoft may cut Windows 10 support for their systems sooner than the period that they are currently entitled to with 7 (2020) or 8.1 (2023). That obscure "lifetime of the device" concept that they never fully came clean on is part of the explanation.

What it actually means is that, even though they state 5 years of mainstream support + 5 years of extended support, there is a pretty big asterisk that says that the OS has to be kept updated in order to be supported. However, the device may not be able to receive updates (and thus loses support) if

  • The device hardware is incompatible, and this includes when the hardware that was once compatible is turned into incompatible because of a hardware requirements change brought by an update, like they did with the 64-bit 8.1 update (technically a Service Pack) to Windows 8;
  • Your system lacks what they deem to be "current drivers" at that point;
  • Your system is outside of the OEM support period.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/lifecycle

At this point, it seems like the only way I will ever use Windows 10 will be at work on clients' and company PCs. Its never going to get a chance to be installed on my home PCs, lol.

Its curious to see just how many people look at this situation and say "Oh well, we have no choice but to roll with it. It's not a big deal," and happily follow M$ into the deep, dark, EULA-changing forest.

This is a really desperate and pathetic move from Microsoft. From my experience, only Windows 10 has had serious problems.
My other computers that run Windows 7 have run excellently throughout the years.

not sure if serious but for those keeping score:

after a few months i went back to 7 (which i paid for out of pocket).

first it would be a crap shoot having a start menu with startUI.dll fault because of UserExperience.exe. ok, so i got classic shell to cover that - but then sometimes that and my other start up programs (core temp and DU meter) would hang causing a turn the PSU switch off reboot. however, even when proper, i still don't get were folks say win10 boots faster than 7. tongue.gif

those were really minor inconveniences IMO and i didn't rule out PEBCAK. but then to wanted to install hyper-v to put mint in a VM to try so off the programs and feature enabled hyper-v and reboot. thumb.gif

booted into the desktop and looking . .looking . .looking . .no hyper-v. went back to see if the feature was enabled and . . only media player shows up, no IISC, no fax and scan, no other features listed but media player.(????)

so i went to edit the group policy to see if something reset and found no administer templates for computer or user (MMC could not load the snap in) and seen i had the same issue with event viewer. found out it was a .NET framework problem so off i go looking to find . . no available .NET framework installation files compatible for win 10. ran a clean up tool just to make sure nothing was blocking the install.

ok, off to use DISM!!

*what do you mean install.wim not found?* used a work around putting it in a folder on the desktop and mounted that. *what do you mean install.wim not found?*

mad.gif

and i though beating VISTA into submission was an event; that was a day and half along w/several pots of coffee.

so yeah, if MS claims win7 has serious problems, they are avoiding the ones in win 10. which btw, they are pushing builds through faster with less QC.

i know my reply probably had nothing to do with your point . . i wanted to vent a little though.

thanks for that thumb.gif

I am being serious. Try and see how windows 10 runs on asus laptops and you'll see how many issues people have come across.

Apparently you don't understand. Here, I will explain it to you.

Until at least SP1 you are a beta tester. Maybe you don't care but the vast majority of the world is not capable of dealing with rolling the dice on whether they will be able to use their system after an upgrade.
