Anyone good at configuring switches?

Thread Starter
I recently acquired a 3com 4500g gigabit switch for my home/lab use.

I am trying to get logged in to the switch to find out what is going on my fiber ports seem to not be working. But I cannot seem to get console connected via a console cable...

Any ideas?

What utility are you using to console in and what happens when you open a console session and hit enter?

should be pretty simple...
you need a terminal program. I see you're on Win7 so you don't have the default one installed anymore so just get the trial here: http://www.hilgraeve.com/hyperterminal-trial/
start it, no need for the modem connection settings or the installation of a modem, give a name, chose the right port (if you don't know it just try it..) set 19200 bits per second, 8 databits, no parity, 1 stop bit and no flow control, save this settings, start your switch and then try enter after some seconds or control+b.

Try using 9600 baud, no parity, no flow control. That particular setting is what all my Cisco IOS gear, Cisco Nexuses, HPs, Dells, and Junipers use. PuTTY is awesome. w

No luck with the 9600, yes I have the manual, problem is I cannot seem to get connected by serial to the switch- i bought it off ebay and I dont know what its default IP address is set to to access it that way, that was going to be my backup idea. so far serial doesnt seem to work.

What you'll need is a serial to RJ45 cable:
http://www.mtmnet.com/04042967.htm

Use that, as well as HyperTerminal (trial version here, not sure of limitations, might need something similar):
http://www.hilgraeve.com/hyperterminal-trial/

Then, you'll need to connect to the switch over COM1. No IP should be necessary as it's a serial connection. I suggest resetting to factory defaults from there, as you will be able to learn more about the switch through configuring everything step by step. If it allows telnet/SSH sessions (not terribly familiar with this model), I would suggest configuring that first so you don't have to have an extra cable hanging from your switch/management system.
