Help New Skylake Build

Thread Starter
Hi All,
Main purpose is gaming and general internet browsing. Budget around $2800 AUD.
Here is what I have so far please help me make it cheaper:
CPU: Intel Skylake i5 6600k
Cooler: Noctua NH-D15
MOBO: Asus Maximus VIII Hero
GPU: MSI 980 Ti Gaming
SSD: Samsung 950 Pro 512GB M.2
HDD: Western Digital Black 1TB
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz 2x8GB
Case: NZXT Noctis 450
Power Supply: ??????
I am stumped on what Power supply to use? I would like the EVGA G2 650W, but it is not available in Aus. What is a nice gold certified 550W or 650W to use?

Is the NZXT case any good? What other Mid-tower cases can you recommend that fit the D15? need something with good airflow.

I don't run any CPU intensive programs so x99 & i7 is not required.

As SSD's are getting so cheap, should I not get the HDD?

Im still browsing, but will there be any significant hardware releases in the next few months I should wait for?

Go to PSU section, Gold rated PSU means nothing. You have to check the OEM.

You can easily cut some money out and not give up much (if any) real world performance:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($355.00 @ IJK)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($99.00 @ CPL Online)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-AR ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($245.00 @ IJK)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($167.00 @ IJK)
Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($235.00 @ IJK)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($72.00 @ IJK)
Video Card: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB Video Card ($999.00 @ Mwave Australia)
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro M ATX Mid Tower Case ($109.00 @ PCCaseGear)
Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply ($159.00 @ CPL Online)
Total: $2440.00
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Save money on the non-GAMING motherboard, the D14 performs within the margin of error against the D15, the Gigabyte G1 980Ti is cheaper and equal to the MSI card in performance & overclockability, the 850 EVO SSD is much cheaper and the real world difference between it and the 950 PRO is not worth the premium IMO, the case you selected is outrageously priced against the Phanteks that has all the same features, and the 750w G2 PSU is a bellwether performer.

80 plus has nothing to do with quality and you can find junk that is platinum rated.
Why 80 PLUSĀ® is Irrelevant to You When Buying a PSU

Last note that the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M only comes with a single 140mm fan in the back so you will need to buy at least one more 140mm fan for the front.
I would buy two Noctua NF-A14 fans and move the Phanteks fan to the top and the Noctua fans in the front and back.

There's absolutely no need for 950 Pro in a gaming rig. I was interested in buying one myself, but the advantages of of 950 Pro vs a modern SSD are measured in fractions of seconds when it comes to casual stuff like game loading times, system boot or running programs. $350 for 512GB 950 Pro ? You can get 1,5TB of SSD space for around $400 buying Mushkin Reactor 1TB + 512GB. You can easily take that $50 difference by dropping that Asus ROG Board, which is ridiculously overpriced at $230.

That NZXT looks like a great case, I've been eyeing one too for a while thumb.gif You should have a look at mastercase 5 too

are you going to OC your CPU ?

Cheers for the suggestions all
So still go for a EVGA 750W G2 even though i'll probably never reach 750W?
I do like the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M, I'll keep in mind that I would also have to get case fans.
Definatly overclocking, so I am after an air cooler and MOBO that can cater well.

drop the 950 pro for this list? I was really keen to get the 950pro, be good to save space/cables.

750W is pointless IMO. Too much for a single flagship, not enough if you wanna add another one later. 850W is much better if you consider expanding with another card. If not then 550W. (CM V550 would be fine)
Losing 1TB of SSD space for cable management is not really sensible. SSDs take hardly any space. Like I said, if this is a gaming rig then 1,5TB of mainstream SSD would be miles better than 512GB 950 Pro.
I've got 980Ti from MSI with an ATX board and I recommend using D15S not D15. I have D15S which is supposed to have better pci-e clearance and still it's close to touching the backplate (I'd say about 0,5cm). D15/D14 will have clearance problems since the backplate adds a few mm to the card's height. D15S also takes 65mm RAM to avoid any DRAM slot 1 problems.
