Like others have said, this monitor is meant for content creation and color critical work really. Refresh rate doesn't matter much for most uses this monitor will see.

variable refresh rate is much more important IMO.

http://www.kitguru.net/peripherals/monitors/matthew-wilson/dell-cancels-its-4k-oled-monitor-due-to-image-quality-issues/
they mention the reason this monitor got canceled/delayed was because of image quality issues like color drift when viewed at an angle.
Then by releasing this monitor for sale at 60hz puts me in suspicion that the high refresh rate of 120hz could be the reason behind the image quality problem,
as it also reminds me when i upgraded from an asus 60hz monitor to the asus vg248qe 144hz i was shocked by how horrible and washed out everything looked until i used a custom color profile.

While possible, that would be really weird. Transition lag on OLED is practically zero. Why would refresh rate make a difference if the pixels are mostly idling no matter how quickly you refresh them?

If a custom profile fixed your VG248QE it's purely a calibration issue and has nothing to do with hardware quality. Some laggy LCD panels do suffer when refreshed too quickly because the liquid crystal can not fully reflect the updated voltage, and over drive can complicate things further. But non of those issues apply to OLED.

I just remembered people who were purchasing korean ips monitors and were bragging how awesome everything looked, when they were attempting to overclock the monitor to achieve a higher refresh rate many of them were reporting image quality issues showing up at higher refresh rates.

I want to also add it looks the dell oled monitor still uses a usb-c connection even at 60hz which makes no sense why they couldnt add a dp connection.

I think the original 120 Hz version was cancelled due to practical reasons. It only had a USB-C connection to get 120 Hz, so basically you would have to connect it to a laptop. What laptop has the GPU power to run 4K 120 Hz? Not many.

I think they simply went back to the drawing board and redid the electronics/connectivity. Since there are no DP 1.3/1.4 TCons manufactured yet for displays, they simply added DP 1.2, HDMI 2.0 which made it 60 Hz limit, lowered the price and bam. I expect a 120 Hz version of the display later in the year when DP 1.3/1.4 Tcon chips come online.

I'm aware of those IQ issues on those monitors. But we also know that IPS panels are laggy and often running on the edge of what they can handle refresh rate wise. If you push it further it can't keep up, and IQ issues are expected, especially with aggressive over drive. OLEDs definitely have no problem keeping up. Dell claims <0.1ms G2G lag, and if the existing smaller OLED panels are any indication the actual number is likely lower. No matter how quickly you try to refresh that thing it would be like "Oh, another frame? That took so long."

There could be problems with something outside the panel, like the controller freaking out when flooded with data. But with a 3500USD+ price tag it's hard to believe they are not using capable options here.

BTW, some industrial LED (not OLED) panels internally refresh at 3000Hz+. They can still provide more accurate and consistent color than any LCD if properly calibrated.

Which only applies to modern AAA gaming. This is hardly a gaming monitor.

With that said, it would be reasonable to assume most people in this product's target audience prefer to use desktop workstations when available.

Move the mouse in OS and scroll up and down while browsing using 60hz monitor, is like cancer to the eyes...
