Good choice. That 5K Dell will be relevant for a few more years. The Swift? Not very...

I was just playing The Witcher 3 last night on my 5K and was just thinking - even though 4K is a pretty big step down from 5K, the increase in FPS and refresh rate would be quite good. I am still going to get 4K Surround with these panels - but I hope the new Titan (Pascal) can handle that resolution much better than the OG Titan or Titan Black (both 4-Way SLI) did in 2014.

DP1.3 is not even enough for 10 bit 4k 120hz, so the panel would have to be switched to 8 bit for that to work.

Isn't more than 8-bit useless for gaming?

Pretty much, I dont think there are many games that implement 10-bit, if any.

No. Firstly, the panels you're referring to there are AUO panels. There is no confirmation of Samsung using them in any of their products - although they might, they have their own 100Hz SVA panels in development and are more likely to be using them than something from AUO. That website that said Samsung had '2 new models in development' (30" and 35") simply had their wires crossed and misinterpreted a TFT Central article which they quoted as a source.

Secondly, the UP3017Q has mDP 1.2. Not DP 1.3. Dell have explicitly confirmed this as per my article.

Yes, there's only one game that supports 10 bit (Alien: Isolation), but if the screen is aimed at professionals I'm not surprised that they didn't think people would be fine with 8 bit colors.

Oh, that is a shame. Since I think the odd's of this years new generation video cards having a Thunderbolt 3 output is almost zero, I guess I will be passing on this monitor. Someone could still get it and run it with a SLI laptop for gaming!

Why cant they add thunderbolt, usb-c etc in future gpus?

Well they could, but highly unlikely anytime soon. Why put a port on a GPU that a virtually insignificant amount of displays would use?

Basically they are using TB3 because DP 1.3 hardware isn't available yet. I guess in the future this monitor line could easily be upgraded with DP 1.3 once the hardware hits.

Yeah it is disappointing, but undoubtedly we'll see other products using this panel or others a bit further down the line with DP 1.3. smile.gif
