ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Formula Owner`s Thread! - Page 13

Ok having a heck of a time getting the M.2 to function properly. This system seems to be booting slower then my VI Formula and a Corsair Neutron GTX. After spending a good deal of my evening cloning the Neutron to the 950 Pro M.2 ssd and jacking with getting it switched over to GBT while keeping my OS intact. I now have the Neutron removed. I have the Samsung 950 Pro in the M.2 slot. I then have a WD black 5tb installed in either 5 or 6 of the sata ports then I have a blu-ray drive in the other sata 6 socket (5 or 6). I forgot which is which.

Anyway this thing should boot a ton faster then it is yet here I am. I also notice it shows the post screen (where you hit F2 or DEL to enter setup) then flashes to a black screen for a second or two and the same post screen comes back up again. Finally it heads off to boot windows which still takes longer then it should.

Any tips? The manual for this board is vague as heck when it comes to the m.2 socket and bios setting help is obsolete.

Scratch that. I could only get into windows once. Now it's just in the infinite boot loop. Post screen, black screen, post screen again, long pause on black screen then back in bios. I've reset the cmos and discharged the board and still on defaults aside from getting the hit F1 for setup on the first boot after clearing cmos I'm stuck and unable to even get in windows now.

Do you have the boot priority set for the m.2? Have you tried disconnecting all drives including optical and seeing if the boot is still slow?

Yes the samsung 950 is the first boot device. I've also selected it directly in bios to boot to. It leaves bios shows a black screen then back in bios I go. rolleyes.gif Really annoying.

Settings for boot:

CSM
Launch CSM Auto

Secure Boot
Secure Boot state Disabled
Platform Key (PK) state Unloaded
OS Type Windows UEFI mode

Boot Option #1 N1-Samsung SSD 950 PRO 512G
Boot Option #2 P5:HL-DT-ST- BD-RE WH10LS30
Boot Option #3 Disabled
Boot Option #4 Disabled

Save settings....Shows post screen....black screen....post screen....long black screen....back to bios rolleyes.gif

Check settings again for boot after the above:

CSM Same
Secure Boot Same
Boot Option #1 P6: WDC WD5001FZWX-00ZHUA (The WD black 5TB Game drive)
Boot Option #2 P5: HL-DT$%@$@$@ (Blu-ray drive)
Option #3 Same
Option #4 Same

Why it's changing the initial boot drive to a different drive on it's own who knows.

Yeah well, I have an 950 pro too and I also find it is fairly slow, definitely in comparison with my 850 evo. Boot times have not really changed and bios takes a long time too boot too (I know nothing the 950 pro can do about that)
Also in windows it takes long to open some programs and I find it stutters sometimes

What are everyone's temps with an m.2 drive? I'm sitting at a insane 64C. What was Asus thinking hiding this thing under plastic that serves no purpose? They should have made the cover aluminum at least or made the m.2 socket on the back side of the board so heat sinks could be installed. Although because the engineers at Samsung are idiots I can't install heat sinks on mine anyway even if they would clear the cover. They put the sticker over the chips instead of on the back side of the ssd. So pulling the sticker will more then likely void the warranty of the ssd. mad.gif

Hi, I'm looking for a ready-to-print, real-sized M8F schematic to help me mod my case and plan my watercooling loop. Any suggestion on where to find one?
I already made a mockup with a acrylic-like sheet and a sharpie, but I could use something more accurate tongue.gif
Thanks

Hey guys. I'm interested in this board and got a quick question.

Would I be able to run two GPU's and an M.2 SSD? So, two PCIe 3.0 at x8, and the M.2 runs at PCIe 3.0 x4. Is that possible on this CPU/board?

If I remember the manual correctly yes you will be fine but don't think your sticking a m.2 950 drive under that stupid cover unless you want to nuke your drive.

I'm actually planning on using the 960 Pro when it releases. I believe the Samsung SM961 and 960 Pros are faster AND run cooler.

What if I used a PCIe slot adapter that can hold an M.2 drive, would I still be able to have two GPU's in SLI at x8 and a m.2 drive at full speed?
