What is the go to QUIET non-SSD HDD for storage?

Thread Starter
Building an htpc and want it pretty silent. I'll be using an older 128gb crucial m300 but I want some storage too. Doesn't have to be fast but it needs to be quiet. Is there a go to HDD for silence over performance? I was thinking WD Red/Green, but then I read somewhere that newer revisions aren't quiet like the old ones or something. Have had bad experiences with Seagate drive failures more than once so other than avoiding Seagate, I don't know much about which drives are quality.

What about the new "green" WD Blue 5400rpm? Anyone tried them?
I've had good experiences with this Toshiba drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2W02KN0962&cm_re=toshiba_3tb-_-22-149-408-_-Product

Yes, I know it only has 3 eggs on newegg, but it is very inexpensive, very fast, and very quiet. Blows the loud, slow Hitachi Deskstar in my other rig out of the water. The drive is almost inaudible in an otherwise quiet system (undervolted 120-140mm fans).

WD doesn't seem to make Green drives anymore, and Reds are a bit pricey for what you get. So, alternatively, if you really value silence over performance, I'd recommend picking up a cheap 2.5" drive. Such drives rarely make much noise (similar to WD Green), and are available on the cheap. I've been using a Seagate drive, but I have heard good things about Hitachi Travelstar drives as well.

The old WD Greens have been replaced by the new 5400 rpm WD Blues. I haven't actually tried one of the new Blues since all 12 of my Greens are still working fine.

Wow, you're right. Misread the comment, I'm afraid. And I always thought that Blues were moderately performance oriented (tough not as much as Blacks). Still, it does seem that, at least at the 1TB range, the quieter 5400rpm drives actually cost more than the faster 7200rpm drives.

I just bought a 3TB WD Blue a week ago, and it is reasonably quiet (far quieter than the 2TB black drives i have that are between 6months and 3 years old - the blacks also get a lot hotter).

I wouldn't mind a few of them operating on a desk next to me, i think they would sound pretty quiet.
I would recommend a thin WD Red or a Seagate SSHD.
Both are really quiet imo. Personally I would go for a SSHD.
I've been using for the past few weeks a brand new WD Red 4TB, which sits in a plastic drawer avoiding vibrations' propagation in a well isolated case. It is virtually silent to me, I really need to put my ear against the case at night to hear some kind of faint scratching from the HDD. In a similar setup, with your HTPC at a few meters and sound from your TV, it shouldn't be an issue.
