PLEASE NOTE: I will not be providing ongoing support for this thread. Support ended December 2016. As a once off I listed July 2017 updates.

Updates shown within this list appear in Windows Update for Windows 7 Pro x64 ONLY.
This is the configuration that was tested. Other configurations may have more or less updates.

PLEASE NOTE: Set Windows to check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them but it may try to revert to install updates automatically.
Make sure it doesn't do that. We have broken down the list with 3 colors described here:

GOOD
INSTALL IF NEEDED
WINDOWS TELEMETRY OR NOT NEEDED

Added 8 updates to security updates due to Patch Tuesday January. Thanks for the feedback guys.

#5 ·
Just a heads up, previously hidden updates popping back up every time WU search for updates....

#6 ·
That's because GWX or another associated update from Windows 10 upgrade is still on the computer. They have re-released KB2952664. I did do a clean install and when it searched it showed none of those W10 updates. I also use DWS Lite. Great for stopping telemetry. Microsoft are really pushing these updates down our throats.

#7 ·
i re-checked it and im sure i uninstalled all the crap listed under do not install.

#9 ·
After asking a few more people who just removed the updates then hid them, I may have an answer. The ones who just removed the updates and hid them had them come back between 2-4 times. After they ran DWS lite and used that software to hide them, the updates did not come back. Try running DWS Lite. It hides these updates and disables telemetry completely. Let me know how you go with that. Certain anti-virus picks it up as a false postive. If you want a copy of it let me know.

No worries, did the list help?

Just refreshed my rig and I'm going to follow your list for the updates (I've followed a lot of other ones posted here too, but this one is definitely the most comprehensive one

).

EDIT : For the record, I typically only install .net updates and the ones pertaining to my peripherals, chipset and etc. since I don't trust MS' "security" updates (On every install, I typically install updates to about 2012/3 I think and close them off (security ones) ).

#12 ·
Let me know how you go.

#13 ·
Added KB3135445 - Update contains some improvements to Windows Update Client in Windows 7.

This update contains Windows 10 preparation for Windows 7.

You can kinda somewhat do a Wiki style in your OP using Anchors (the black flag icon on the "More" toolbar in the Rich Text Editor). So each section could have an anchor link to it that instantly scrolls someone down to that Anchor.

Alternatively, you can also use the "Spoiler".

Cool. You'll probably end up being able to teach me how to use the Anchors if you decide to try that. I've never used them before, but I know the button exists (the black flag button).

I will be looking at it over the next couple hours since I am at work. Have to use Teamviewer to link to home and that is down for some reason

. A quick search indicates it's not a good update. But I need to do more research to comfirm. Will get back to you on this thread.

Just what I am looking for, I just system restored and was debating what updates to download. Right now, I am having a problem of even finding updates on windows update. I wonder if I disabled something along the way.

I would like to update windows with the ones I actually need.

Any advice on how I can check and see which updates I have / need?

The initial search for updates after a reinstall can take upwards of 30-45 minutes unfortunately. After installing most of the security updates the process becomes faster. The issue is on Micro$ofts side. Most likely they have gimped the update process to piss people off enough to update to W10. To check which updates you have installed go to Control Panel / Programs & Features / View Installed Updates. There it will show which updates are installed. Let me know if you need further help.

I updated my Windows when I installed it and I haven't updated since. Updating Windows is now the greatest security threat our PC's face.
