Buy the ASUS 17" laptop and put it in the ASUS 17" Nomad Backpack smile.gif

Can't find it on ASUS.com, so I used my country as default... is in Dutch

https://www.asus.com/be-nl/Computer-Bags/ASUS_ROG_NOMAD_BACKPACK/

That's what I have (with regular ASUS 17" laptop)

You can put A LOT in there drool.gif and it protects bumps and has water resistant bottom. When I wear it, it fit amazing!

And with my AVATAR... you know... having ROG logo on my back devil-smiley-019.gif

I didn't mean the performance.

I don't mean solid build, that it has powerful parts.

I mean the plastic chassis of the MSI isn't as powerful as the ASUS G751JY, which is Aluminum.

I mean that I would carry this one with me during trips, and maybe I could carry it with me in a hiking trip, if I couldn't leave the fancy & attractive laptop at the hotel.

I talked to you about a hostel dormitory room, because it's not very safe to leave your expensive laptop there. There is locker boxes, and I don't feel so comfortable about them. Or I could put it in the locker, which is a big solution to most of my issue.

So, that means you have to carry it in your backpack to the outdoor trips.

So, which one would handle moving, lifting and putting the backpack?

I would put a protection materials at the bottom of the laptop, so it doesn't get putting the backpack on the ground hits.

Again, putting the laptop in a locker is half the solution, because I would carry the laptop in the airports, moving around with it and a lot of lifting, putting the backpack.

Regards.

One thing to remember there is that plastic can take a beating and be fine, aluminum always dents and then it's there forever instead of taking a hit and staying the same. biggrin.gif

What's the options you are looking / talking about now?

EDIT:

I know you have heard plenty on the performance of the MSI GT72, but I'm still blown away myself after having this thing over a month now. Just for fun, I wanted to see just how powerful the 6820K really is in comparison to my Desktop Cpu 4790K.. I'm running the GT72's 6820K @ 4ghz all day everyday, and that's at it's highest turbo setting. I clocked my 4790K @ 4ghz so it ran the same as the 6820K @ 4ghz. Stock on the 4790K is 4ghz and turbos to 4.4ghz, but I ran only 4ghz max on turbo just to see the true performance clock for clock Desktop VS Laptop Cpu.

6820K @ 4ghz Whooped it wheee.gif

4790K @ 4ghz mad.gif

But where I run my 4790K @ 5ghz , it's a different story kookoo.gif > 6820k

Just showing you what I seen myself today benching the 2. The MSI is no less then getting a desktop really if it comes with that 6820K.. 6700HQ is more of getting great laptop performance, but not desktop performance. Or if you can find the 6820K in any laptop it's beast lol

I had acer TimeLineX, with aluminum chassis. I have to say that aluminum is very nice. After 3 years of wonderful gaming, the screen broke, so I had to sell it for $80, as I bought it for $693.

I'm now in a serious I want to buy the GT72 for $1599, what chances to get this laptop for lower price?
Just the screen broke, so I had to sell it for $80, as I bought it for $693.

Do you live in the states? Microcenter has the model I bought for only $1499 right now. If you watch, I think they had it as low as $1399 at one point on sale.

So, other than waiting for the black Friday, there's no chance to get it on like $1300?

$1399 is also good, the problems are:
1. I'm not in USA.
2. I don't know when the microcenter give this for $1399.

Other ideas that, I'm afraid it's heavy and bulky to move around in a big backpack with a lot of other stuff !!

And, I think it's heavy anyway. If the 80L backpack in full load is 30kg, and with this beast it's 33.8kg ! It's not so much I guess.

Other people on Amazon cleared the information that it's heavy. I don't think 3.8 kg is very much.

And, I think to buy a gaming laptop under $1000, which has 960m. Then, I get confused of the information I get:

1. Videos on YouTube show the card is very good, and plays games at high.

Like;

2. Information on forums, members say it's way not so powerful. And should cause you some lagging with intensive gameplay.

I don't want to spend $1000 and be disappointed wink.gif
post #38 of 93
The 960m isn't that bad of a gpu, it's the lowest I'd go for gaming that's for sure. The 970m is around 50% faster and sometimes even 80% faster. I ran some tests that the 960m ran as in Ice Storm, the 960m scored 67000 and the 970m scored 165000, thats 245% faster lol in that test. Firestrike the 970m is twice as fast just about.

I'm playing the new Rise of the Tomb Raider which was free with my GT72. I'm only able to play that on High settings with the 970m. If I was to play that on a 960m, it would have to be med-low settings to even be playable TBH.

All 17" gaming laptops weigh about the same give or take a little. You'll be in the same boat unless you go for a thin style 15.6" gaming laptop. Those do have more heat coming from them tho and might start to throttle a little under intense gaming sessions.

For wanting to take this with you on backpacking trips, that's kinda hard for me to recommend any laptop really. One slip or fall could break any laptop if you fell backwards on it no matter what one you went with. This is more up to you really for what you are going to do with it. I can say the MSI line of gaming laptops are where it's at tho this year. Asus seems to be just not caring as much lately and thinking that people are just going to buy their stuff since they made good things in the past. LOL, as soon as I see a company get lazy like that, I'm done with that BS and looking for the next company that's trying to make their name stand out and that's MSI right now. You know where I stand on the matter and I've said plenty for you.

It's your call now and your money you're about to spend thumb.gif

I know that what I'm about to say is not apples to apples (meaning that I'll talk about a heavy OC 960M versus a stock 970M card), but here goes:

I recently bought another laptop, with a GTX 960M. I was not expecting much from this GPU, but it's fairly capable if you're not going to play recent games at Ultra. From the start I intended to OC the card as far as it would go and this is what I did (with a modded VBIOS). So stock, the 960M has 1202MHz boost and I have it OC'ed to 1420MHz right now. That is pretty high. I can play Rise of the Tomb Raider with High textures, 16xAF, Medium shadows and Medium level of detail, SSAO, dynamic foliage to Medium, Tessellation On, PureHair On, FXAA, everything else On with 32-34fps average. 1080p, of couse. Very rarely does it dip to 28fps, mostly in cutscenes, where the level of detail is excellent. So basically it runs at probably better IQ than XBONE and at a better framerate.

Very nice I would say. This game is extremely demanding, it eats the GPU and CPU on my desktop as well and altough I run higher settings on the desktop (GTX 780), there are quite a few moments later in the game where it goes down to 35-37fps, GPU being overclocked, mind you.

Of course, the 960M is a far cry from the desktop GTX 780 or the 980M that I have in the other laptop, but I am impressed, to be honest.

Also tried Fallout 4 with High Settings, Ultra Lighting, Shadows and Shadow Distance at Medium, GodRays on Low though, and I get around 50fps average outside towns and 40fps in towns. Very nice.

Probably completely offtopic what I just wrote... biggrin.gif
