Wanting to learn virtualization, what server/hardware recommended ? - Page 3

Another +1 for KVM. I have no need for it now but it taught me a great deal with my little Micromachine in my sig. You don't need special hardware for KVM either, if it can run a recent linux server distro it can run KVM. Stuff a box with a decent quad core, 16gb of ram. Also suggest an SSD to put the VMs on.

I can't speak to other virtualization platforms. Another benefit of KVM is the host is fully available as a server as well. Some deployments are better served on bare metal from what little I've played with.

So if i were to buy a dell R610 with 2 x5570, 32GB ram, 4x 300GB 10k drives, per 6/i, 2x psu, for $550. Would that be worth?

Provided you don't care about power or noise, that's a solid deal.

Yes you'll want your vdisks to be on SSD's.
