Games that can be installed/played without internet

Thread Starter
My apologies if this is not quite the right place to post my question, if so please move smile.gif

As the title says I'm looking for some good games to purchase (add to my newegg cart) that don't require internet to install/play. I've found a few good ones that I can play without internet, but need it for install. I don't currently have internet and probably won't for a couple months (military has been/is moving me around a lot).

I'm about to order a semi decent laptop from newegg, and just want to be able to play a game or two while o await my orders.

Extra points if it plays nicely with a 360 gamepad.

Thanks in advance all knowing OCN!!

I'm not sure, so this does not help

But..............the internet is so SLOW at this new house, it would probably literally take a week to DL something like FO4

At times this internet slows to 20-30kB/s, and the fastest I've ever seen is ~200kB/s. My last internet was fibreOP and could DL at 2.5MB/s.....................what a difference

You're probably looking for older games then... Batman Arkham Asylum is a good one that comes straight off the disk, early Assassin's Creed games would work too. You probably want to avoid games from Valve as most of them require steam to run... Otherwise you could emulate some old games totally offline.

I don't know, there are tons of old games you could crack out that would work no problem without internet.

I can most likely manage to find internet long enough to at least activate a game. I know that would up the amount of games available. Damn you DRM!!! ninja.gif

Whether you can find the following at retail is another matter, but all games on GoG.com (from the sister company CD Projekt Red that makes the Witcher series) are DRM free.

You might also want to look at the list of games on Steam (some of which you may find at retail) that don't have DRM. See instructions for each on the table:

This is a tough one because most games require you to download a few GBs of patches etc before you can play.

Only game I could play out of the box was far cry 4, but even then I had to activate it on uplay
post #7 of 7
So no digital distribution, no patches, no online DRM and no cracks because they all require downloads?

Presumably disk check is OK. The patch thing is the biggest obstacle.

The first thing that comes to mind is Max Payne 2, which was the most polished game at release that I have ever purchased. It only had one patch, and this is the changelog:
  • Fixed game crashing to "Exception: Bad Allocation" on Windows 98/Me during loading of certain levels. This may potentially fix other crashes as well.
  • Improved loading times on low-end computers.
  • Improved Technical Support Tool to include CD-ROM Model.

So, far from critical. You can install and play vanilla Max Payne 2 with no internet. The one caveat is that it only supports 4:3 aspect ratios, and since your laptop is unlikely to have 1:1 pixel mapping, the game will be distorted. There is a widescreen fix, but it causes corrupted reflections in the game.

I honestly can't think of many other retail game releases that I'd recommend playing vanilla. You probably want to look at re-releases (GOTY, editors choice, etc.)

Actually, the Oblivion 5th Anniversary Edition edition comes with the latest patch included and doesn't require an internet connection for installation or play.

UT2004 ECE doesn't have the final patch, but it's somewhere in between. No internet required, but you may run into the offline hung rundll32.exe Games Explorer nuisance if you're using Windows 7 (applies to many older games).

I recently purchased the "Hitman Collection" four game set (cover art as below), and all four games were 100% patched and DRM free out of the box. Unfortunately 3/4 of them have widescreen issues IIRC.

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 100

F.E.A.R Platinum includes the latest 1.08 patch, no internet required.

I believe that the most recent retail version of The Witcher (Enhanced Edition: Director's Cut) includes the latest patch and is DRM free.
