Want to connect my Floppy Disk Drive to a modern Motherboard [Or USB]

Hello everyone!

I have an XP computer which I intend to strip (thus, using the ATX case) for a new gaming computer. It has a working floppy disk drive, which I would love to keep. I know that floppy disk drive connectors no longer fit into a modern mobo, as I think I counted 34 pin (I'll double check later).

Are there any adaptors that would work or is it time to say goodbye to this golden example of technology frown.gif

EDIT: I would much much prefer to use the existing floppy disk drive (3.5") from my XP computer, instead of getting an external USB one . I know it's complicated for the sake of being complicated but I want this soooo bad! redface.gif

If your board does not have 35 pin connectors for the floppy, you're out of luck. If you want to cherish floppy drives though, you could get one of these

Surely there must be some adapter somewhere? :O

You could use one of these.
Sabrent

Sabrent Internal Floppy Drive 1.44mb Plus All-In-One Card Reader

INTERNAL 3.5 fdd USB connection internally.

Can't get my phone to paste links correctly but a search should turn it up.

The rhetorical question back is "Why not?"

It is the top form of computer-hardware banter that I could conceivably do.

I also love retro technology (Still own a Computer 64 (1984) and an Apple Macintosh (1987)) and I really want to compliment modern gaming technology with some brilliant memories of child hood.

I actually have an old Athlon system simply for writing floppy's and backing them up in storage.

I want to keep the actual floppy it came with instead of buying a new one.

Are you sure there isn't an adaptor for it to fit inside a mass storage slot? frown.gif

I found this here:
http://webstore.kryoflux.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=28

Seems to work with both 3.5" and 5.25" floppies as well as a few others. It's also very expensive.

Honestly though, i think you might be out of luck if you want to use that drive in a modern computer unless you're willing to pay a lot for an expensive controller. You can pick up an internal floppy drive / card reader for a lot less than you'll end up spending on any controller. You won't be able to find a simple adapter that'll work.

I was reading in another thread i found online somebody mentioned that some old sound blaster cards and such had floppy controllers on them as well. I'm not sure how true it is, but i seem to remember maybe seeing them before? Might be worth looking into, provided the computer has PCI slots.
