Advise on Am3+ Motherboards - Page 3

I had an Asus M5A97 with FX 6100, hated it lol. The max overclock I could get form it was 4.4Ghz.
The 970 chipset is very limiting, and the M5A97 is a budget board designed to give you that Asus badge as cheap as possible.

I upgraded the board to a Sabertooth 990 FX R2.0 and instantly hit 5.0Ghz with only basic tweaks in the BIOS. Im now using an 8320 on this Sabertooth which was maxing at 5.6Ghz but not entirely stable, 5.0Ghz is fine for 24/7 use. No idea how much a Sabertooth is where you are, but in the UK it was £140, compared to the £75 i paid for the M5A97.

Get a board with the 990 chipset, or go Intel.

Thread Starter
Already bought a Gigabyte 970 ud3p. I was kinda stuck budget wise and the way the Canadian dollar is going didnt want to wait and pay alot more if the $ went sub 60 cents U.S.

I would be fairly certain his one gig sticks have different timing than his four gig sticks. Unless he manually sets his ram timings I don't thing it would be ideal, stable or not.

Intel has a reputation for a stronger IMC. I could not stabilize four sticks of 2 GB RAM in my UD3P 2.0 board, regardless of voltage and speed. I even tried them at 1066 and it wouldn't post.

They were both OCZ and rated for 1600. One was a 1.65V and one was a 1.35V. One would think they'd play nicely at 1.5V and 1333 but no. Interestingly, both were happy to run at 8-8-8 by themselves even though they were rated worse. The 1.65V set was rated only 10-11-10 I think.

However, the board is fine with two sticks of 8 GB RAM at 9-11-10-30-42-1T and 2133. The RAM is 2400 Patriot that utilities say is 3T.

I also ran my 1.35V 1600 rated 16 GB set at 8-9-9 1800. That set, though, needed 1.5V to stabilize. It wouldn't post at 1.35 even at stock.

Well maybe if you set both sticks to 1.65. It's like crossfire you have to use the weakest clocks for both cards

In this case the 1st 4gigs of ram are dual channel the rest (6gb) are single. The two 1gb sticks will run dual channel with 1gb from each of your 4gb sticks
