Today the 290 is clearly the superior card.

Polaris is 4th generation GCN. So even though there are architectural enhancements to improve shader efficiency its still based on GCN architecture. btw its not that Nvidia cannot support two architectures. Nvidia has in the past supported their GPU architectures for longer time periods than AMD. Eg: Fermi . But Nvidia has now chosen to push sales of its latest gen by choosing to neglect driver improvements of previous gen. Gameworks is a part of that strategy as Nvidia's previous gen cards get hammered in Gameworks titles compared to latest gen.

Just like 7870Ghz is as fast as GTX 960 and 7850 OC is faster than GTX 95 or as fast as GTX 760.

At 1080P... yet people prefer buying i5 6600K and GTX 960 over R9 380.

And nope. Polaris is not improved GCN3, its completely "new" architecture. GCN2 and GCn 3 were improved GCN1.

You could say that even now. Look at these pictures to spot the difference.biggrin.gifguess which is which (Click to show)

Ok. I was just saying what the graph was demonstrating that single gpu and dual gpu set-ups from AMD were yielding identical results.

Now if a patch has changed that or what since then I have no clue, but when a 295x2 and a single 290x are getting the same fps results in a graph (just like single and dual fury card set-ups), it says to me that crossfire isn't working properly yet for that title.

I looked into it quite a bit at the time with numbers from TPU's bench suite in games released before and after Maxwell, the reference 970 was 10% ahead of the 780 in older games and 20% in the newer ones with a roughly even split between games released before and after. Apparently they've done something about it, but its hard to tell. We are talking about 5-10% performance tweaking here, and theyre not breaking their necks getting Kepler cards up to date for the newest games going by what I've seen recently. That's not to say theyre unsupported at all.

It would also though be fair to wonder with AMD's more limited resources, and with the time between their driver releases as it is. How are all the GCN cards going to fair after Polaris' release? Can they afford to support 2 archictectures fully if Nvidia cant?

Yep, I remember those early days in your thread.... lol. And have to give you credit for bringing those issues to light.
I think after the initial stink about Witcher3 and Nvidia throwing a bone to single card Kepler users, noting else has happened in terms of optimizations in newer games for Kepler. I typically wouldn't care about this, it's only gaming crying out loud... Lol. But, I do believe that AMD cards have held up much better than the Kepler cards, and this difference in performance, or lack thereof in Kepler's case, is particularly more acute given the cost of the top end Nvidia Kepler cards that pretty much suck now compared to the much cheaper amd cards.

"Dubbed Polaris (the North Star), RTG’s new architecture will be at the heart of their 2016 GPUs, and is designed for what can now be called the current-generation FinFET processes. Polaris incorporates a number of new technologies, including a 4th generation Graphics Core Next design for the heart of the GPU, and of course the new display technologies that RTG revealed last month."

So there you have AMD saying Polaris incorporates 4th generation GCN. thumb.gif

Almost too funny reading "R9 290" and "GTX 780" and superior in the same sentence.

Its 2016 ffs. Move on and stop discussing ancient and outdated GPUs

Yes it is... Raja talks about how competition improve their arch every 2 years while AMD make completely new arch every 4 years.

It would be very funny, if NVIDIA push async shaders also... then we will be talking about GTX 780 vs R9 290/390 vs GTX 970 for much longer. Well with 2,5K shader R9 390 is complete monster for its price. If DX12 will help to utilize these shaders more efficiently ... R9 290 owners will be happy.

I think that possibility just went out of the window after the unveiling of AoS.

if R9 290/R9 290X is ancient and outdated I think we can say the same about GTX 970/GTX 980. Hawaii GPU powers the R9 290 / R9 290X and R9 390 / R9 390X. The R9 390 / R9 390X have slight improvements (faster memory/core clocks) and double VRAM but the underlying Hawaii GPU is the same. Anyway R9 290 = GTX 970 so I don't get all this noise of outdated GPUs.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Sapphire/R9_390_Nitro/23.html

btw the Hawaii GPU is playing the latest games very well. Just like Maxwell is doing. So whats with all this outdated nonsense.tongue.gif
