The Torture Rack, Where Hardware Goes to DIE!

The Torture Rack, Where hardware goes to DIE!

This is a idea I have had for awhile and never got rolling. I have finally decided it was time, and have put a motivator to get it complete and perfect as quickly as possible. I was getting ready to move my sig rig to a caselabs case (STH10) for more cooling. I decided to put off my case labs build until after this is complete.

The Plan
The plan Consists of 2 things.
The first is a LD PC V4 Test Bench build. It will have some severe modifications and will be customized for my needs. This will be the main part of the build and the most important aspect.
The Second will be a wire shelf Rack that holds the Test Bench, A Monitor, A KB and Mouse, A external radiator for the Benches loop, A Water Chiller, Various other supply's, LN2 pots ect.
The complete Idea is two fold. It will be both a Mobile Extreme Benching setup, and a Second Gaming PC setup.
There will be 2 parts to this build log, This will be Part one. This post will cover the Bench Setup, a build on the Bench setup that will be used when not benching other hardware.
The second part will be posted in the Extreme Cooling Forums, that will not take place until after the bench has reach 100% completion however. I will post Pics of that when it is done and link to that log when it has started.
Components
Components for Part 1.
Static Components, as the Bench is used for Benching lots of pieces will be changed so these are the Static Components.
The Bench, These are permanent fixtures to the Bench, the actual hardware will be changed frequently but these will stay the same.
LD PC V4 Test Bench.
EVGA G2 1600w power supply (custom red cables)
Intel 730 series SSD 480gb
Samsung 950 Pro SSD 200gb
Aquaero 6 XT
Aquacomuter Flow meter for the Aquaero.
6 Scythe GTs 3000 RPM pwm version
11 EK Vardar 140s 1400rpm
Dimastech Flexible Fan mounts

The Loop, also a permanent fixture.
EK Evo Supremacy (My GPU blocks will be whatever blocks I have on those GPUS so they are in the changing hardware.)
EK Dual DDC top with 2 PWM DDC 3.2s
Monsoon MMRS Reservoir
2x 360mm EK XE radiators
Monsoon Blood Red Hardline tubing
Tygon Norprene Tubing
1x Phyoba Supernova 1260mm radiator / Phyoba Supernova rad box (may have its own Pump and Resovoir)
As we all know fittings are kinda up in the air stuff changes, anyway here is a draft.
1 Bitspower Q Block (MB)
5 Bitspower T blocks (MB)
11 Bitspower 90 degree Rotaries (7 adapters, 4 1/2 by 3/4) (MB)
2 Bitspower Rotaries 60 degrees 1/2 by 3/4 (MB)
6 Bitspower Compression's 1/2 by 3/4 (MB)
3 Bitspower valves (BR)
6 Bitspower Fill ports (BR)
8 Male Swiftech lokseal QDCs
6 Female Swiftech lokseal QDCs
12 Primochill Rigid Revolvers (subject to change I just have them so figured I would use them)
Variable Components, These will be Components that are subject to change while I am benching. (There will be a build that lives on the bench when I am not benching with it however, and that is what will be listed)
Temporarily This will house my Current Sig Rig.
Rampage 4 Black Edition
I7 4820k
2 R9 290xs with EK blocks (I have 1 of my 290s in another build ATM, but I will get it out asap then there will be 3 smile.gif)
Gskill DDR3 2400mhz
The planned build for when my RIVEBE goes into the STH10, will be a Skylake build with an I7 and maybe a 980 or 970. I will decide later, (who knows maybe this will become my new permanent case and it will get a RVBE and 3 new GPUs smile.gif.)

The Theme
The Theme Will be Torture / Horror. It will be black and red setup with fake blood in places to give some cool effects but more on that in the log later smile.gif.
The reasoning, This rack although I will throw a Skylake build on it for its off time, is Benching, Extreme Killing hardware (old and new) Benching. Although the goal is never per se to kill hardware, with subzero temps and serious amount of voltage that happens a lot. However this way it goes out breaking records or at least getting close.

Okay so here is my skecthup smile.gif granted I haven't used skecthup much (this is pretty much the first time doing something like this) so go easy on me eh.

I will put most of the pics in the spoiler. Here is 1 though.

MORE PICS! :) (Click to show)

I will throw an animation on Youtube a little later. I want to wait till its all routed with tubing ect. This is just a rough draft.

This while it does give you an Idea of the plan has changed due to the bad quality of wire shelf units. I am now using an Actual test bench on top though with a similar setup.

Oh it wont just be for old hardware smile.gif It will be for regular benching as well as Suicide benching of old hardware and new hardware smile.gif. I mean hopefully the new wont die but anyone that has Extreme Overclocked knows that it happens smile.gif.

I guess the title was a little too descriptive, but no worries about that because there will defiantly be lots of killed components on this rack thumb.gif The goal is breaking records, and with that comes lots of broken hardware hehehehe. I am even going to buy a Corsair 1500I just for this rack so I can pump enough volts to turn my mobo into Frankenstein.

Well I would have pics of the wire shelf right now, However it seems that the shelf I ordered sadly is junk frown.gif. I went with a slightly cheaper brand and well that turned out to be a bad idea. I knew I would have to make a sacrifice on color because of that and figured that is okay I will paint it. Well the shelves came in and are bent, 1 shelf is bent very badly and that simply is not going to work.

So now I need to take a step back and find a better shelving unit for this purpose. I am going to see if I can make this work with just replacing the one shelf or if I need to start at the drawing board with a better brand.

Well I got a few more wire shelf units from a few other places for other projects to test quality. They are all pretty shoddy, 1 is way better than the rest but it doesn't come in black and I don't feel like getting the whole unit powder coated.

I also seen a flaw in my measurements, all the larger shelves wont let you start the bottom shelf until 5 inches up. This is a problem for my dimensions, however it led to a solution smile.gif.

I am going to go with the OG idea, which was to have a fully self contained test bench on the top, then have a shelf below with the external rad. Then the bottom shelf has the chiller. Most will stay the same only instead of being a small bench on the top, and the valves plumbing going through the plate, I will be moving the top and second shelf into 1 unit that sets there. This way I can switch wire racks later if and when I find a better one or get one powder coated or go with a different shelf type.

I think what I am going to do is use the wire shelving for now. And then later after all is done build a custom metal shelf and have that powder coated. I have a few benches that I have my eye on I need to make a decision and pull the trigger. I have to wait till Friday at the soonest, so this weekend or early next week I should have a bench on the way smile.gif.

Okay update a little sooner, I decided a bench that would fit all the boxes that I need, it should be perfect for my needs after a little modding smile.gif.

What I choose, is a Little Devil PC-V4 due to them seemingly no longer being made I went ahead and bought it today so it should arrive soon.

This bench should allow me all my needs. I can still do the valve system perfectly on the bench though, I can mount the reservoir on the bench. With some modding I am planning I will be able to use the Dimastech fan holders for LN2 cooling, (this was a big part of what was making me want a Dimastech).

There will be quite a bit of modding done to this bench for my needs and I will update the OP with the new plan, although it is pretty much the same, just with the merge of the top shelf and second shelf.

The interior I plan to use 2 XE 360 rads, a MCP35x2, and Monsoon blood red hard line through out. With Monsoon lock collar PETG tubing so the system will be 100% stable at all times no worries about moving it.

And of course tons of tons of Bitspower 90s and t blocks fillports and Swiftech QDCs, (you will see why its going to be insane to tube up). I will also put the Pumps on a swicth base with the abiolity to use external or internal power smile.gif.

Okay so update time, I got a package from Germany today smile.gif.

Click for update, Quite a few PICs. (Click to show)
LD PC v4 in its box with the top packing material off smile.gif

More Pics of the Case.

The PC V4 getting ready for some test assembly. My beautiful Ifxit Macro bit set and solid Alu driver make there appearance.

Getting ready for some test assembly smile.gif The PC V4 and Accessories and My kick butt screwdriver smile.gif.

The Factory Drive cage, Which I will be modding. The cage slips in an out like the 5.25 bay. When inserted it is vibration dampened from the case to help with noise. I plan to Re purpose this drive cage to a pump mount for the dual ddcs that will be in the build. It will slide in an out, it will give me a solid mount. It will also be vibration dampened by its design does it get any better? I think not smile.gif More on that later.

Another pic of the HDD Drive Cage, just to give you an idea of what it was.

Rivets Removed and top flipped, temporarily the top is held on by 4 thumbscrews with the benches standoffs being used as nuts, I know that is ghetto but they were in reach and its temporary.

Pics of the board from the front after the top was flipped, As you can see removing the rivets ripped the powder coating off the holes, this sucks but in the end it will be okay as there will be something mounted with those holes. More on that much later but its coming!.

Kinda messed up a little bit on removing these 3 rivets. The rivet starting spinning and took off a little powder coating, The new rivets should cover this up though so no biggie.

The other rivets are clean, as I used an pair of pliers to hold the back of the rivet from spinning. It had been a long time since I actually removed rivets from anything that was powder coated. I watched a video from MNPC Tech about doing it carefully, sadly they didn't mention to hold the back.

The top plate of the pump holder. This was the top plate of the HDD Cage. I cut off the top and filed the edges, its not perfectly straight or filed the best ever but it wont be seen so no problem (it is a pretty good job just not 100% perfect.). I must say I did a pretty good job though seeing I used a pair of tin snips and a file lol smile.gif too cold to go outside to use the dremel and my man cave is in disarray.

The 2 plates that make up the Pump plate.

The pump plate put together. (Bottom Side)

The pump plate with some thumbscrews in it to hold the 2 plates, though it doesn't much need it smile.gif its pretty tight. These were just a test, in the end it will have nuts inside that will epoxy down and use anodized red button head m3 screws.

Another note about tightness, It is very tight. This is how it was mounted stock, however the aluminium that connected was much longer down. There bends were not perfect so the stock plate was not the same dimension on the top as the bottom. However we are talking like less than a mm, it does cause the pump plate plates to bend a little as you will see later. I will file down the inside pieces of the plate so they fit better.

The top of the pump plate after painting the edges with a touch up paint pen.

The pump plate installed in the Bench. (see the bends, I will try to get this filed today.)

Another angle of the Pump plate installed. (you can see the bend better here). The benc also made it not want to go in its grommets very well. I did pull it out and try it again and was able to get it in the grommets, however I need to fix that bend.

Noticed this while testing the pump plate, 2 rivets on the bottom side of the case are missing lol. Its no big deal to me, as I will be re riveting the top with red rivets and doing the bottom to match. However this is still a little disheartening that its like this, a 300 dollar bench case shouldn't be missing rivets. I guess its really no matter anyway seeing how this case is EOL and very hard to find lol, (I got the last one in black I could find)

More to come soon, The rivets should be here next week I may try to do a few things here and there before that but the next update will be after the rivets come in.

Also my man cave is in a state of disarray atm, due to me making some repairs to the ceiling and floor that are long since overdue. That was why I was working on the kitchen table lol. The snow has stopped my work on the Man Cave atm, so I am going to get it to a cleanish state this weekend so I can work in there for the rest. I will also try to setup some kind of photo booth for better pics (though I really need to get a DSLR and will buy one for the final pics).
