Black screen of death. - Page 2

Scary stuff. My money is on the PSU if you can rock it and have it POST after that. Took me quite a while to narrow down my failure to my PSU though. Lucky for me, my current set up has 20 case fans and is so freaking loud you know when it shuts off ha

Obviously the base of the heatsink is the hottest, running around 43C. Top of the headsink sits around 40C. Temps were taken 12 minutes into an AIDA64 stability test.

Just a thought... Hows the back of the motherboard look? This happened on my old board I believe but every once and awhile when I was working on my PC and the back of my case was open and I happen to either touch or put something up against the back side of the CPU bracket, it'd lock up the system and black screen. Just a thought to check all your motherboard screws and the back of the CPU socket.

I would also try reflashing your motherboard bios too, see if for some reason that's causing it.

Best of luck! Not being able to fix a problem is the worst! drunken.gif

I'd bet PSU as well. I'd hed on over to bestbuy and grab what they have as a "viable" psu to test against yours and see if the problem persist. If it is the psu then you can return the one purchased from bestbuy and get a much better one from another vendor and if its not the psu then you can still return it and go back to the drawing board... I wouldn't bother with trying anything else until you know you have a good working psu. Considering temps are in check and this is something that happens in games I would think it to be a power problem...

Well... I do admit I forgot to change my flair. A few weeks ago I bumped the OC back down to my known stable 4.6GHz at 1.4125v. The 4.7 OC would randomly crash.

So, all good now ? The OC was to blame ?

No, I took the OC off a few weeks before this started happening. I'm not getting my hopes up, but I haven't had a black screen for 4 days.

As for stuff hitting the back side of the mobo, that could be a possibility. I've got a ton of fan power cables running behind there. Plus some of the remnants of my socket cooling shenanigans are still back there (I hot glued a 50mm fan to the back of the socket).
