850 Evo/Pro firmware issues sorted out by now?

Thread Starter
Hello all, I am researching the 250/256gb Evo/Pro models for a new build and ran across alot of people complaining about samsung's lack of support with a slowdown bug and other issues updating the firmware on it. Since most of the searching I have been doing is from comments made 6-12 months ago I'm wondering if these issues have all been resolved by now. If I pick up a new one in the store will it be ready to go without issues? Also feel free to add thoughts on if the Pro is worth the extra $30 for more reliability.

To my knowledge, this only affected the 840 EVO. Pro version was unaffected. I had one. With the patch it worked well enough that the drive is still in service somewhere. There have been no issues with the 850 series EVO that im aware of.

I will have to check them out. I am currently running 4 850 evos and an 850 pro and have never had an issue.

Edit: Without reading too in depth on the issue, it sounds like they jacked up one of the firmware updates. I do not believe this has been any kind of persistent problem or I would of seen an issue by now.. Between work and home I run a mega crap ton of evos and have yet to have an issue.

Perhaps someone who experienced the problem will chime in.

The guy in your second link got it sorted out by simply cycling the power.

There are many good SSDs out there now though, you do not have to stay with samsung.

seems fair enough, I am trying to stay between $90-120 and samsung seemed to be the best with the rest falling behind. Would you recommend a pro over the evo? Pro seems to offer better peace of mind with being a little more reliable long-term.

I have an 850 Pro and haven't had a single problem. This issue affected the 840s, not the 850s. That is the reason why I waited to get the 850.

Link the the article right here on OCN. That will get you sorted out.

Those links are to an article and a thread that are nearly a year old now. The first article states the errant firmware was pulled February 24, 2015.

Duh, I see you are the OP and realize the issues are resolved. Carry on!

The EVO is fine. Only reason i went with the pro was because it was on sale for nearly the exact same price as the evo for a bit. You will be happy with either drive.

strange that two people were on the list from post two with an 850 Pro. I may just get the 850 evo then.
