DDR3 Ram is default at 1333 or 1600 and running 2133 is an overclock even if the ram is marketed as 2133. When you select 2133 either by ram speed setting or using an XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) you are actually overclocking. Some ram that is marketed for 2133 is actually not stable at that speed. Also the Integrated Memory Controller that is built into your i5 can also vary in quality, resulting in bad ram overclocks. The one I have in my current chip isn't the greatest compared to other 3770Ks I have used. Often when the XMP doesn't work it is either a weak IMC in the CPU, or a incompatible ram to motherboard situation, or a bad binning of Ram by the Ram MFG.

There are a few options like raising CPU VTT aka VCCIO aka VCCSA (overvolting the CPU's integrated Memory Controller) a slight amount or raising DRAM Voltage (overvolting the ram). However I wouldn't do that just yet.

I would lower your ram back to 1333 default and keep working on getting your Vcore/Overclock stable settings.
After you get that stable then you overclock the ram (try 1600 then 1866 before going to 2133).

Isnt that false advertising? i never got that. why advertise 3000 and when you plug it up it runns 2133... and often not stable at 3000.... thats weird

Sort of. Its a YMMV (your mileage may vary) kind of thing.

yup. i went from an i5-3330 to an i7-3770k. overclocked from stock to 4.6 ghz and i literally got a 50 fps increase. it was crazy.

Thanks for the reply. Wow, that's an eye opener about the marketing of ram.

I've loaded fail-safe defaults which put my ram back on 1333 (and CPU to stock as well (and even reseated the CMOS battery for good measure)

My Bios+HWMontior show my vCore at 0.972 to 1.176v (stock - 3.3ghz, disabled turbo) - I also disabled 2 of my 4 cores to reduce power. consumption in case it is a faulty PSU.

33c idle btw.

I'm not even thinking of overclocking atm as I'm getting random losses in power (instant shutdown)

My tech-friend thinks the RAM is possibly faulty or the PSU. I'll swap both my ram/psu and see how it goes...

I may get some new ram anyway. What do you recommend? CL7 / cl9 @ 1600 ? The techie who sold me my MB recommended I stick with 1333 ram...

Thanks again for the info.

That is a good stock voltage at load so you have a decent chip in my opinion. Any chip under 1.2v stock usually can do 4.5 ghz stable with at or under 1.3v. You don't need to disable the 2 cores. Try running everything stock for a few days. Try running memtest86 from boot (not within windows) to test the ram atleast overnight. http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm Use a bootable USB to do this. As far as testing the power supply, you can check the voltage in HWmonitor and make sure your voltages fall within the specified ranges:

Here is a chart I got from Intel's ATX specifications PDF

You can also test a spare PSU as you are doing. I'd test the ram and the power supply separately so you can isolate the problem.

I wouldn't bother with new ram unless you need it. Make sure your existing ram is the problem before committing.

33*C idle is kind of high for H60, so you can probably remount it for improvement, maybe get it down to 25*C. But I wouldn't bother with this until you get the underlying problem figured out.

No, If you are stable at 2133 MHz with no overclock then it is not false advertising.

Once OP gets the underlying issue resolved then we can help OP get 2133 ram, its probably a matter of more VTT or more DRAM Voltage. To the OP, if you do mess with VTT you have to be careful to not overvolt it too far because it is easy to kill your IMC. I think the rule of thumb is stay under 1.1v VTT for a 24/7 OC to avoid killing your IMC.

Update:

No idea why. but my PC has been stable for 48 hrs - not a single loss in power - and I've restored bios defaults....even OC'd my cpu to 4.5ghz and my ram to 2133.

Just to clear up the ram speed rating thing, the ram is actually tested and rated at the speed advertised, but that's not the only thing that determines if it will work.. the motherboard has to be designed to support that speed on the connections to the cpu, and the memory controller inside the cpu has to be stable controlling the ram at that speed. Motherboard support is fairly simple and straight forward, it's usually the memory controller in the cpu that causes ram to not run at it's rated speed.

I have 2400C10 ram, my i7 4770K could only run it at 2200 stable.. but my newer i7 4790k can run the rated 2400C10 profile without any tweaking at all. The 4770K would do 4.2Ghz at 1.17v but not like to go higher, the 4790K does 4.6Ghz at the stock voltage settings (not auto, offset +0.001v) with 1.267v at load.. on mild aircooling.

It's really down to luck of the draw and design, intel's memory controller in general has slowly supported higher and higher ram speeds with each design update since they first integrated it into the cpu with the original i7.
