x99 to z170 for gaming?

Thread Starter
I mostly play games, but been getting the bug already to change for something else. Basically i just feel like I'm missing out on a bit of game performance by not running a 6700k. I'm currently using a 5820k. If you're wondering why i want to do this it's really only because of the differences in minimum fps i saw in the Digital Foundry tests. But I'd be losing 2 cores.

Also my ram kit has gone faulty, Amazon is refunding me the full amount i paid last year for a 16gb crucial 2400mhz kit.. The kit is over £60 cheaper now, so i can get a better kit. I wondered if i should take the opportunity to get a dual channel kit and go z170 or would doing this really be a waste?

If not and people recommend that i stay put on x99, should i choose Corsair 3000mhz CL15, or 3200mhz CL16? Not much price difference.

Well the 6700k would really be a waste, but that's up to you.

A 6700K would be a downgrade so no.

Also note that not all 5820K CPU´s can work with RAM faster then 2800 MHz.
Get a 2666 MHz kit those are sure to work.

I am in the same boat as you are. I just recently sold my X99 setup last week and plan to go Z170, but with a 6600k instead. The best thing you can do is weigh out the pros/cons, think about what all you use your rig for and how often. Then you should decide whether or not it is really worth it to you. Another thing to consider is the type of games you are currently playing and how high of an overclock you want to achieve. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

X99 > Z170
5820K > 6700K

Keep the x99 and get the 6800k or 6850K when it releases in a few months.

Pretty sure a 5820k is better than a 6700k in every scenario, I could be wrong though.

Fix your RAM issue and keep the 5820. You won't notice the minimum fps difference.
