My existing hardware are as follows:
Intel i7 5930k
Asus x99 deluxe
Corsair 16GB vengence lpx
Asus strix GTX980 in tri sli
Corsair Neutron XT 960GB SSD
Corsair Neutron XT 480GB SSD
Crucial MX200 500GB SSD
Corsair 900D case

Motherboard, cpu, and the 3 gpu are all water cooled

Usage is general purpose, gaming, development and testing of distributed applications using VMs.

What upgrade would make me be able to run VMs faster?

Nice setup!

For VMs I'd upgrade to more memory... if they are slow you probably have each one set to 2gb I bet. Set each one to 4gb.

What monitor do you have?

Mighty setup but yeah RAM is lacking... I mean for something as extreme as that, 16GB looks puny... I'd say 32GB minimum
