[Help] Me get Linux as my daily driver - Page 11

post #101 of 171
@Petrol
Eh I don't know man, crunxhbang used to run on 54mbs out of the box = ] shows what a custom kernel with openbox can do.
Unfortunately crunch is dead.

Fortunately it doesn't matter.

@all
So I've been playing with tons of legacy hardware lately and I am afraid its all in the clock speeds and instructions sirs and/or madams. I have a box that runs on atom, has 3 gs of ram, running OpenBSD. All normal functions (x server, wm, many programs) run relatively smoothly. But when it comes to web browsing, I get a big old n0pe. I've tried using every browser available, and still results are similar.
I've achieved best results in latency terms with midori, but it had so many SIGSEGVs i lost count.
This machine has been trhu multiple OS, settling on OpenBSD due to best possible legacy hardware support and a functioning malloc.
So yeah, in summary IMO, modern web is forever off limits to many legacy machines. I'd say shoot for Core 2 Duo generation (and its AMD equivalent)
*NOTE. If you however visit old salt sites (daemonforums, linux and bsd official sites/forms/mailing lists and others like it, that are written in simple format and are not resource intensive) you will have no real issues. This is what I generally use this box for. Chat, voice comms, mailing lists and a like. Its works really well! It has other productive uses, but unfortunately browsing the real web is not one of them = \

@jsc1973
I've run puppy's on this one machine that had 2 gigs of disk space and everything I tried at the time (except for BSDs) had to large of a footprint to fit on said 2 gig space. Puppy was... well alright, but again same shtick with web browsing and living on a modern web. Clocks just didn't cut it = \ Other than that, I am unfamiliar with puppy community (as in what changes have they made to which subsystems to stand out and etc.) so I can't really comment further than this.

CrunchBang did sound like an appealing mix of stuff, and in retrospect I should not have poo-poo'd Cinnamon since I'm really not that familiar with Mint. I did give LXDE a spin recently and if I had to use a stacking WM, Openbox would be the one.

Forgot one thing

@All

In terms of my browser rant, here is much more detailed explanation from someone who is orders of magnitude smarter than me
http://www.tedunangst.com/flak/post/browser-ktrace-browsing

*And no I am not Ted Unangst, nor in any way shape or form affiliated, I would not be hanging out here if I was = p

But yeah, when I say "put BSD on your machine, it will bring it back to life" I don't mean, with all the modern functionality and ability to keep up with ever growing mountain of experiments that is the current state of web browsers.
Its sad but true that legacy machinery can do three things well - Be a development/testing platform, Be a server, Be a communication/playground to a point. What that point is, depends on just how legacy are we talking = \

I pretty much whitelist by default now and if a site won't fail gracefully without enabling a whole whack of third-party domains I will simply not revisit. For services I need to use there is sandboxing and Tamper/Greasemonkey scripts that I have to write by hand to get the layout right, which often involves removing literally a dozen ad sections. What offends me the most is ads on sites that either scrape or rely on community/volunteers for all their content. I don't think OCN is too bad but many car sites have been utterly destroyed by "professional" site owners buying the communities wholesale and stuffing them with ads and crap.

hah I just got to the comparison between ftp+xterm and chrome... I wonder how bare webkit runs

All of what you just said is waaay to much work for me Petrol = p but I applaud the effort ^^
Generally speaking a simple whitelist based personal fire wall (with rules going both ways! I never allow anything on a machine to initiate connections I first didn't check out) and LibreSSL is as far as I am going to go with my webbrowsing paranoia = \

You can, if you want, just make a ramdisk and place your browser there, and have it synch when needed to the metal. But that might be overkill. Chrooting it instead of tempfs nonsense isn't a bad idea, but OpenBSD does that by default.

p.s. and that article is amazing haha. "Two threads playing ping pong"

Well, I got Slako booted from USB and now have to get it installed on the HDD. But its slacking time now and I'm too wasted to spend anymore time on it. System seems quite slick while I played with it from LiveUSB visiting OCN & reddit, but never had more than 2 tabs open in FF. I'll update you all on how it goes tomorrow

Got Slako installed on my drive and now running pretty decent. System is fast and even web browsing faster than in Win7. I'll see how far this can stretch before I need to scale back. Anyone have an idea on how to install overclocking tool on this ? The laptop gets too hot and I installed RMClock when on windows to set voltage lower than what the step used at particular frequency. This helped lower temperature on this while using Windows, but I need something on Linux
