M4A785-M DDR3 support or not?

Hi everyone,

Does my MoBo support any types of DDR3 ram or not? The Phenom 2 CPU obviously does, but I find contradicting info on the MoBo: some reported it even being shipped in bundles with DDR3 RAM, others say it doesn't and will never do.

anyone got some information on that? thx smile.gif

When looking for that kind of info it's usually the manufacturer that has it.

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M4A785M/

Memory
4 x DIMM, Max. 16 GB, DDR2 1200(O.C.)/1066*/800/667 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel memory architecture
*We recommend that you install the DDR2 1200 memory modules on the yellow slots for better performance.
*Due to AMD CPU limitation, DDR2 1200(O.C.)/1066 is supported by AM3/AM2+ CPU for one DIMM per channel only.
*Refer to www.asus.com for the memory QVL (Qualified Vendors List)

Well, the manufacturer himself doesn't seem to take care of proper multi-language support then. I was, of course, looking at the german product page, and there it supports "Dual Channel DDR3 technology" biggrin.gif

https://www.asus.com/de/Motherboards/M4A785M/

Anyways this seems to be a typo then....

It is an AM3 board which is DDR3. If it were AM2+ or AM2, then it would be DDR2

After comparing images, it looks like your board is DDR2, due to the position of the keys in the RAM slots.

EDIT: It should also say DDR2-1200 OC above the south bridge heat sink

This motherboard supports multi-core processors with unique L3 cache for AMD® Socket AM3 and delivers better overclocking capabilities with less power consumption. The ASUS M4A785-M supports dual channel DDR3 technology, which allows via HyperTransport ™ 3.0 data transfer rate up to 5200MT / s. The motherboard also supports AMD® CPUs, which were manufactured in the new 45nm manufacturing process.

Yea thats a typo, i checked the specifications tab and its ddr2.

This is a good question since you have a Phenom II which is an AM3 CPU and should be compatible with DDR3 memory modules.  However your mileage will definitely vary depending on your motherboard.  The ASUS M4A785-M has only been tested with DDR2 according to our own records.  AMD CPU's tend to have the memory controller built into the CPU as opposed to the motherboard which usually dictates the type of memory it can accommodate.

Another thing to keep in mind is the Ram key slot is a different location between DDR2 and DDR3:

I'm a moderator on the Asustek Forums and if you can point out where you see that I can try and have it fixed, but I'm not seeing it in the link you provided..
