Computer is randomly shutting down :( How to find the cause?

Thread Starter
Hey there,

Lately I got an 2500k, r9 290, SSD , win 10 64. p67a-ud7-b3.

I made this thread as I was over-emjoyed with my first OC: http://www.overclock.net/t/1588868/my-first-oc-i-am-absolutely-blown-away-massive-increase-in-performance#post_24826333

It's a beast vcore @ 4.5ghz is 1.35v. - 59c full loading via prime95

My FPS skyrocketed.. I went from 45.5 fps to about 65 fps in my fav game – Company of Heroes. 2.

I'm just very concerned about the fact that I'm getting (totally random) loses in power. It's not temperature related as HWmonitor shows I'm not over-heating. Heck, I even put my bios into load-defaults (all @ stock) and still the problem persists.

I also tested another SSD with the same results. I'm still getting great performance, no loss there.

I do have a 3 year old Corsair TX850. 1 dvdrom, 2 SSds and 1 IDE HDD, 16 gb ddr 2133mhz ram (which passed memtest).

The PSU is still under warranty I believe. I guess the only way is to run to some tests using my brother' 650 watt PSU.

What do u think think? likely PSU fault? possible MB fault?

Even if I do have to RMA my PSU I don't know what I'd do for several weeks waiting for a replacement... We do have a 500watt PSU around we've never used but 500w isn't likely to be powerful enough.

Nick

note: When I unplug things like my addtional HDD, dvd rom and USB 32gb it does seem to powerdown a lot less.

Have you checked Windows Event Viewer?

Look for what was going on just before the problem occurred.

Windows event viewer is not recroding any useful info - just "unexpected kernel power failure" - there's nothing before then either.

Yeh, I removed my overclock days ago and the problem still persisted.

HOWEVER,

For the last 24 hrs I haven't had a single loss in power (before it was every 1-2 hrs) - I have no idea why.

Just to make sure that nothing has been corrupted or broken in the OS have you got a spare drive you can do a clean install of windows on ?

To rule out it being an OS issue rather than the hardware

Id check to see if you've damaged any hardware or if your system is still not stable

Clean install of OS - second drive

Return everything to stock
run a stress test -
Reset Cmos
stress test

If that works with no problems then its got to be software

When I had random shut downs, it was the PSU. Corsair replaced with no problem under warranty. Personally, the 1st thing I'd do is test the PSU. I would not uninstall and reinstall anything just yet, too much time and trouble. Testing the PSU is much faster. Talk to Corsair.

Nick, what was the outcome?

Lol its not always the PSU ....

The fact hes been overclocking it recently means he could of corrupted some OS files - SFC scannow / event log - software error
Also he could of damaged some hardware from not being careful enough.

Half hour to install windows on a secondary drive seems quicker than a RMA which takes a few weeks and leaves him with no machine . biggrin.gif

If it happens under load (like gaming), it's more than likely the PSU.
