Wanna Upgrade my 5870

Thread Starter
I've had a long run with this card(got it in 2010 I think), and the 5870 has been a great card but its been showing its age a bit. I want to upgrade to a R9 380 or a 390. The 5870 still does pretty well in most games, but I would like to upgrade before it starts choking.

That and I can upgrade my brothers old GTX 260 to the 5870.....its a win for all.

The question is will I notice a huge difference in performance(is it worth it yet or should I wait till the 400 series)? Its been awhile since I upgraded too.....Will my CPU bottleneck the GPU?

I game at 1440p so, take that in consideration I guess. Money is definitely a thing, so best performance and best price. I''m not scared of nVidia either I just would like to go ATI if I can.

Thanks in advance! thumb.gif

If you've been playing @ 1440 with that 5870, you're a man of patience eternal. biggrin.gif

I honestly don't know what to recommend without knowing how much money you're wanting to spend, but my own personal preferences for 1440p and new, high texture games require at least a R9 390.

If you are willing to go used, r9 290s offer fantastic value for the performance. You can usually find them around 250 and sometimes lower.

Without knowing total budget it's hard to recommend beyond the generic 'used 290(x)' or get 390/Gtx 970 new type recommendations that will crop up.

Essentially 200-275 look at 380 or 290 used. 300+ look at 390 or Gtx 970 (with my recommendation on the 390)

The only game this card choked at 1440p was Far Cry 3. I have not tried any next gen games yet but everything else seems(Skyrim, Lost Planet 3, Red Faction guerrilla etc) to work on @ 1440p as long as vsync and AA is low or off. 1440p with Unity games is terrible though and its only going to get worse as the card ages.

200 something is what I'm looking at. I can go 300$ but I'm going to have to raise the money. lol

The 380X 4GB seems like a good deal....Is it worth it? Or should I just wait and get the 390?

a r9 290 would be around 225% of a 5870,but next video cards will be at least 20% faster,so 245% faster

Like other have suggested an used r9 290 or wait for the new cards

Originally I was running a 5850 but GTA V was too much for the 1GB of ram, the 290X gave a MASSIVE leap in performance.
Dont even think about `bottlenecking` I run my sig rig for a few months, I have now upgraded to a 5820K, there really wasnt much gain on the Graphics scores. Spend ALL the money on the GFX and dont think about the CPU for at least another year

Yeah I'm thinking with the funds I have right now I will either go with a 4GB 380X or a used 290X if I find a decent deal.

REP for all the helpers!

Make sure you have a good look at the reviews on the 290X, try to find a model with good cooling!
They get very toasty and are pretty power thirsty too!
I made a bad choice with the ASUS DCUII model, the block that fits on the GPU is pretty crappy and IMHO ASUS did themselves no favours using it other than money if you check out this linky I take off the cooler!

http://www.overclock.net/t/1565635/build-log-external-ek-watercooling-with-we540-rad

The ridiculous temperatures prompted a very expensive watercooling setup, but in the long run, its an investment.
I got very playable framerates out of everything I threw at the X5470/290X combo @1920x1200 pretty much everything I played could be maxed out, Fallout 4 was butter smooth. GTA V was the only thing I couldnt max out, it was very close and I still wonder if it was worth bothering with a 5820K

Good Luck in your quest for more FPS!! thumb.gif
