An open source repository of libraries and code examples is great, don't get me wrong, but it still relies on the DX11/12 or Vulkan APIs and the GPU drivers implementing these APIs.

How could that be relevant when their OpenCL implementation is broken? Megakernels that work with CUDA do not with OpenCL and AMD GPUs. Even split into microkernels that work with CUDA are a headache with OpenCL and AMD. You have endless posts and mail listings available at the developer site of Blender Foundation complaining about how utterly hellish is working with the AMD OpenCL compiler. Even after AMD engineers helped to split the megakernel of the Cycles render its OpenCL version just can't run some of the CUDA features.

And AMD wants to put an automatic translation layer on top of that mess. Hell yeah!

You know, touted as open, yet nobody else was allowed to use it cause it was in "beta" to then be forgotten in the abyss of unused technologies.
At least tressFX crawled back for another game, oh sorry i mean PureHair...

Mantle still exists just mutated into DX12 and Vulcan.. essentially other APIs where built off of it.. which actually was the entire point..

Just another case of AMD not having the resources (in terms of manpower and/or money) to do anything to differentiate themselves, while hoping that randoms will do their heavy lifting for free...

AMD will need to do a lot more to fight Gameworks on equal footing. Nvidia is currently using market share to entice developers to use Gameworks in AAA titles, developing it in the process. Most of the Gameworks bugs will end up getting fixed over time. They also provide engineering support as well as free hardware. AMD, will at least, have to match that or do better.
