Ok here is my issue here. At the moment I can only buy 1 or the other. I currently own a Dell S2340 23 inch that I have had for years and its still in mint condition and has never faulted but as the years go by I want bigger/better but at the same time If I go better my 970 is more then likely going to struggle. I currently have enough AFTER I still my 970 I can buy a 980ti or buy a new monitor.

I currently have 500.00 & I can sell my 970 for id say 225 to a buddy which gives me 725 but that only buys me A. A good monitor or B a 980ti. I also have a around 600 blurays that I love watching so I really wanted to go 4K but Im almost sure my 970 would run like crap at 4K thats why I wanted a 980ti lol

This is just a hard choice. 980ti at 1080P current monitor? or 4K for gaming/blurays with my 970. The one thing im noticing is with Witcher 3. The game runs smooth 60fps anywhere but in a city like Novigrad I drop to around 50-52 so I have to drop down to Medium amount of people so my FPS dont drop

There is new NVidia refresh coming in few months, so any videocard upgrade today is bad timing. You can always run custom resolution on 4K monitor if you are not satisfied with frame rate. Or lower quality settings -- frankly you would be hard pushed to notice the difference. GTX970 is fine card; in fact, it is the best performance/$ your money can buy.

^^
What this guy said. The 970 is plenty strong enough for most games at 1440P and can even manage decent performance on a few at 4K. I say get the monitor now and upgrade the card later. Or maybe SLI

Blurays are 1080p, so the 4K wouldn't really be useful for that unless you have a really good upscaler.

I currently have an OPPO BDP-103 & I do understand that blurays are not 4K right now I just want an awesome PQ quality for my blurays

Ah, the upscaler in the OPPO is really good, so 4K definitely wouldn't look bad.

I would probably stick to what you have now, and save money for next gen GPU and a decent monitor.

I play at 3k resolution with a 970 and have decent results when MSAA is off. But I just dont feel 4k being that good right now when there isn't any capable GPUs that can put out >60fps across many games without sacrifices. I personally dont get wowed by 4k so crippling performance for a single 16:9 monitor isnt worth it to me. I would wait to see what pascal and polaris brings to see if 4k will be worth it.

If you dont feel like waiting, 1440p or 21:9 monitor would me my choice right now and would be decent on a 970.

Last person raised a good point. Nothing beats watching blurays on my professionally calibrated Panasonic TC-P65VT60. That and the sofa is just way more comfortable.

I say stick with the 970 right now. Save the money and see what comes out in a year's time.

Thats the one thing im worried about honestly. Been reading alot and its showing that a single 970 rynning 4k will need alot if sacrifice. So lets say this then whats a good 1440p monitor to grab then. My real goal was to just go bigger. 23 inch is nice but i need bigger like a 27. Would 400 be enough for 1440 or do i need more

GPU doesnt make sense right now. A good 4K monitor will be good for years to come, like the Dell you are replacing. 980ti on the other hand is nearing eol and will be quickly replaced by a better card with a memory configuration more suitable to 4K. If you do anything get the monitor.

Edit: Don't buy 1440p right now unless you really want to save money. It's already old gen resolution and therefor a poor investment.
