Give a **** about the videocard, wait for the nextgen. Also you could not wait for long enough, beacaue video card prices are usually dropping eagerly. Im on a 20" 16:10 Dell and have an Ati HD 4670. Im sparing for a 40" 4K. Later buying a nextgen videocard. Also waiting for the next gen 4K Monitors too biggrin.gif. Play older video games, like Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of Earth for example, that would be probably the first game I will play thourgh on it.

There is no current single GPU solution that will give you 60+ FPS on Ultra at 4k, in the latest AAA titles. It's just not possible right now.

Also, just because your monitor is 4k does not mean you have to run games on 4k. You can run them on 1080p with decent AA levels and it will look just fine. 4k is exactly twice the vertical and horizontal resoultion of 1080p so there won't be any stretching or anything to worry about either, the resolutions will scale perfectly.
Its like running 720p on a 1080p monitor, it doesn't look as sharp but there's no weird stretching or anything like when trying to run 4:3 on a 16:9 monitor.

Jumping from a 970 to 980ti just wouldn't make sense on your current 1080p monitor. At least upgrading your monitor gives you much more flexibility on what you can do with your money.

I have never checked any of the smaller than 40" monitors, but above it there are not one of them can do this, they are using a different algorythm.

Edit.: I probably will wait for 'till this will not be a problem. Hopefully it will happen. smile.gif

If it's not 3840*2160 native resolution then it's not a real 4k panel. Which is exaclty twice the vertical and hortizontal of 1080p

1920*2 = 3840
1080*2 = 2160

The funny thing about GPUs is that next gen will play new games a little better the current gen play current 4K games. If 980 To get 35 fps 4K then next card will get 45 fps in new games.

Another funny thing about GPU's, is that people expect the next gen to run 60fps @4k with a single GPU. That is not going to happen, I don't care how good Pascal looks on paper lol

i wouldn't personally do either right now. because reasons. those being:

-the 970 won't play any game at 4k and decent fps
-the 980ti will get outdated quicker than the 4k television
-the 980ti won't play witcher @ ultra 4k anyways
-you can use DSR to downsample a multitude of games that can be run in 4k with the 970
-4k support for blu-rays is limited and online streaming is slow to move over.
-4k SCALING in windows, even windows 10, is terrible from my experience.

if i had extra money laying around and didn't have anything else to spend it on i'd invest in some AMD stock. they have nowhere to go but up. it's a pretty big gamble in zen and polaris but i personally think it'll pay off. but im not the one with money laying around lol

High end Pascal will be ridiculously expensive. If you do a lot of office work, get a 4K monitor. If you do a lot of gaming, just carry on saving up money. 4K monitors won't drop in price anytime soon, there's still too much 1440p competition.

I run 4K with a single OCed 980 Ti with no AA, and some stupid, rubbish, invisible graphics settings turned down (e.g. grass quality in GTA V, DoF). Average 55-60fps, very smooth and lovely gameplay. The 980 Ti will age fairly well considering Pascal will cost a ton of dollar. Literally the main setting you can drop to regain 60fps at 4K with a single OCed 980 Ti are the "special super extyremmeme Michael BayTM FX" and shadow quality/distance. Not hugely affecting image quality, and still shows a great image.

On a 28" 4K monitor, 1440p can be run without AA and it looks OK as long as you sit a little further back. A 970 can easily handle that, with a few settings (as noted before) reduced.

Thread Starter

ive already decided to go with a 1440p monitor over 4K. I just really now want something bigger then my current 23 inch. I was going to grab the ASUS PB258Q but it seems like looking at reviews on newegg and amazon it varies but all say either they have right corner backlight bleed or full screen bleed. So im stumped now on what to buy. I want to stay around 400 for a bigger monitor. ACER makes a bunch of 1440p monitors that have great reviews so I may snag one. I really want a 27 inch.

I was really interested in the UltraWide monitors but it seems they are IFFY and not all games support them
