There are excellent AAA titles out there (Witcher 3 for instance), just like there are excellent indie games.

There are good games, there are bad games. Trying to over-analyze things (based on purely subjective criteria anyway) is just a waste of time.. Don't see the point of these sorts of studies or articles. Just play the damn game if you like, don't if you don't. Or go outside! Best graphics you'll ever get! Game-play is pretty deep and immersive too. I heard you only get one life though. tough game

As much as I generally enjoyed Witcher 3, have to say it was slapped pretty good with the AAA woes they're talking about here. I know that I played that whole game looking at my min-map. I also didn't discover anything since it was all marked on the main map for me.

Playing Dragon's Dogma right now. Maybe not as good looking, large, or polished, but, there are parts in that game that gave me the chills. Like a sense of adventure that I haven't felt in a game in a very long time. Though, footing it across the same spot for the 100th time gets old fast. Lack of good fast travel does lead to some very interesting encounters.

Nah. I want to see where I'm going. Just would like it on screen. Not on a mini-map.

If the devs put question marks in the game I'm going to use them. I just don't like them.

That logic can be applied to AAA games too you know? If you ignore the trash that AAA games have to offer, then you'll find some great games in the AAA field too. The fact remains that there is an awful lot of junk in the indie scene too as well as in the AAA area. The notion of product over money is silly. Developers have to make money too but it's about finding a balance between delivering a quality product while keeping the lights on.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that a monetization plan for a game that requires capturing most the market, via building for the smallest common denominator, will lead to results that are absolutely lacking, if progression and exploration of the medium is the measuring stick.

What they're progressing at primarily, is how to burn more money on production values.

For gaming to reach its full potential, it'll take the realization that a game is a success, as long as 1 guy enjoyed it. And of course it'll take the social framework to support such.

Of course it might never reach its full potential. But the direction should be clear.

It's kinda like with, you know, traditional art.

edit: making money is nice though. There's nothing wrong with exploring as many ventures as possible to make money. But it's not the primary factor to creating a success of a game. That comes from for example careful consideration, among other factors.

I think when people think of AAA publishers killing games, we think of Mass Effect 3, which reeked of EA pushing deadlines causing a rushed ending; and Dead Space 3 with single-player micro transactions.

The problems aren't the trash, it's what the development under a AAA publisher does to pervert a game.
