The industry is different now. Games in the 8/16-bit era had development teams as low as 10 people, for an "AAA" game. There's a lot of good, popular SNES games that only sold 100000 copies. Final Fantasy didn't get popular until FF7; the original FF only sold 400k copies. Who knows how many of the later ones before 7 sold here, it was not exactly popular.

I'd say it would even be hard to compare technical aspects, because it's like comparing apples and oranges. Who here can really say what's harder, high-level DirectX11 programming or SNES 65c816 assembly? I'm not really a programmer so I don't know but it would seem to me that maybe SNES assembly (and the space limitations of say, a 4mbit ROM cartridge) might be more technically challenging. Maybe if some of the same development principles or limitations of the SNES were applied to modern games, then recent games wouldn't take up 30GB of space on my hard drive.

Gaming is so big now and there's a ton of people that basically won't play 1) old games or 2) games with bad (or even acceptable) graphics. It's become hugely commercial, and lost a lot of things in the process. I could bring up stuff like paywalls and DLC but I'm not going to; this stuff was nonexistent before the PS2 era. They don't cater to long time gamers and they don't cater to people who really love games regardless of the graphics. They cater to Joe Sixpack or Jim Teenager who just wants to shoot stuff and wants it to look realistic. That's the problem.

My point though, is really just how games used to be smaller, more difficult to make, have smaller budgets, smaller teams and so forth. Super Mario World was developed with a team of 16 people and (this is really undeniable) it's one of the greatest games ever made and one of the best selling games ever made. People love it. Critics love it. Do you really think Call of Duty Modern Warriors Black Ops Stealth Fighter III is going to be remembered in 20 years? smile.gif

Most of the budget goes into artists/ asset making. So you have like 50 people making 3D cups and cars, but only like 5 software engineers optimizing performance.

No, i don't. However, the circumstances are very different. New CoD's are just more installments of a long-running series of FPS games that are competing with other long-running series of FPS games. Without trying to take merit away from Mario (i've played my part as a kid investing countless hours into many of its iterations), being the first of its kind and very accessible helped make it so ubiquitous. You can publish extremely well made FPS games, but people are going to remember Doom and Quake the most, in part for the same reason.

Doom and Quake were different and (arguably) better because they both had basically a sci-fi, far future feel to them similar to the Alien movies or something, and the game was primarily single player and vs AI enemies.

I would take Doom, Quake, UT anyday over CoD or Battlefield because they're actually fun and pretty inspired.

Nothing is inspiring about modern day military and Iraq as a setting with boring "realistic" guns like M16s or whatever. I almost see CoD et al as one big perverse US military recruitment ad. And you wonder why so many kids/people are desensitized to war and don't oppose it, and in some instances SUPPORT it.

Shooting demons on mars with a BFG-9000? I'd take that anyday. It's something that cannot happen in real life. And that's what games are about and are supposed to be, you should be able to do things you can't do in real life. If you want to be in the military and shoot other people, and be shot at, by all means. thumb.gif

Agreed, Mario was the first and the best. Unsurprisingly, good Mario games are still coming out today and this is why I have a Wii U and a 3DS and will still buy the games. (Super Mario 3D World has a 93 on metacritic.)

If people wanna play CoD or Battlefield or whatever other FPS comes out nowadays (seems like everything- even RPGs- is an FPS), I won't tell them not to, just realize that you vote with your wallet. If you want more inspired, deep and innovative gameplay, it isn't going to come from supporting "Hot New Game of The Year Tactical Shooter FPS #1272".

I find this difficult to believe

Doom and Quake innovated. The created environments that were fun to explore with plenty of gore, crazy weapons, great physics, it was just all so wild for the time

Playing those games today for more than 10 minutes is a challenge for me. Quake 3 maybe, but that's more of a modern shooter now anyway

They are totally different genres, and not just because of the setting differences.

Doom and Quake are traditional pure first-person shooters. UT is an arena shooter. CoD and Battlefield are tactical shooters.

Different character/avatar abilities, different goals, different level design, and different approaches.

Really? I can and do play DOOM from time to time.
It is just a great way to shoot stuff without having to worry about nonsense like xp,levels, some event you cannot pass because your teammate has to open the door and basically every other trope that current shooters suffer from.
