Hey Imglidinhere , can I ask you to add something to the OP? I think this would help many people understand what's supported with the m.2 slot. I was looking on Dell's site and trying to see Hard drive upgrades and just trying to figure out what m.2 SSD is actually supported and I can't find that. Could you run a benchmark on the SSD that came in your laptop as in ATTO, Crystal Disk Mark, or the Samsung Magician benchmark? I'd like to know and I'm sure many others would like to know if this is actually a NVMe based PCI-e SSD or if it's a Sata3 SSD. Being that this laptop has the DDR3 ram in it, I have reason to believe that it may be a Sata3 m.2 slot, but I could be wrong. I have no fact to go off of really. A quick benchmark would show us for sure and that would definitely be a good thing to have in the nice review that you have put together so far.

Thanks buddy!! Hope that's not to much to ask thumb.gif

I am planning on grabbing a 16GB set of 2133MHz ram for my next big purchase. Everything I've seen shows that higher speed memory tends to aid in higher minimum FPS in games that use more of your CPU. Might as well max out this machine while I can.

Also, I'm gonna grab a 2TB SSD when I finally save up the extra cash down the road.

Okay, so OCN officially needs to allow for larger pictures than 1000x500... this is kinda dumb. Any screenshot I post is gonna look super downsized and everything is really blurry.

That and I need a better suite of recording software. tongue.gif I need something that doesn't devour half my processor.

Yeah, I agree, that's why I only use the snipping tool and snip half of a 1080p screen shot. Then you can read that at least. Trying to snip a full 1080p screen is way too hard to see. Sometimes I try to stretch it a little and it's too blurry as you said.

Good call on the 16gb 2133mhz ram kit. That's what I would want in my machine, oh wait, that's what I have lol. You'll be perfect with that tho thumb.gif

2tb SSD sounds real nice too!! Personally I'm going for a Samsung 950 Pro NVMe for OS and some games I'm playing now, and then just having a 1tb Samsung 850 Evo for older games and storage.

If you do a lot of recording video while gaming, you would see big gains in performance if you record the video to a different drive than where your game is installed from. AS in OS and game installed on the m.2 SSD and record to your 2tb SSD (or whatever you have now).. That should make your CPU overhead come down some and give you better frame rate at same time.

poke.gif Have you had a chance to run a Benchmark on your m.2 drive to see if it's a NVMe or Sata3 interface? WE REALLY WANT TO KNOW THIS!!!! PLEASE ANSWER THIS FOR US poke.gif

If you could do it again would you get the i7-6700HQ model? Looks like on most multithread benchmarks the 6700HQ matches my i5-2500k desktop CPU @ 4.5GHz which is simply mind blowing. Looks like the 6300HQ is still a little behind the power of a 4.5GHz 2500k. Just wondering because in FC4 my CPU is actually maxing out on 2 cores which I believe is causing some bottlenecking.

I'm trying to decide with the XPS 15 if its going to be worth picking up the 6700HQ model. I'm hoping thunderbolt 3 pulls through and I can utilize my desktop GPU to eventually take over the 960M even though its still a powerful GPU for a laptop. I figure if the 6700HQ is as powerful as my 2500k right now that I would greatly benefit in the future with TB3. Hopefully I could easily max out games that way 3-4 years down the road...

I'm still thinking of getting the i7 version, the i5 one isn't even available in Europe.

I'd seriously be shooting for a 6700HQ minimum for a great gaming experience. 6700HQ will be a better choice in just the fact of Core Speed, and plus Hyperthreading which many titles are coding their games for these days. 6700HQ actually matches or just beats a stock clocked 3770K i7 cpu. It should be a good bit faster than the i5 2500k stock clocks. As far as 4.5ghz being equal, that should only be in a scenario that doesn't take Hyperthreading into account. If coded for Hyperthreading even 2500K @ 4.5ghz should fall behind the 6700HQ a bit.

The i5 that came in OP's laptop isn't bad cpu, just lacking a little on the 2.3ghz clock rate. If you could use some software to keep that up to turbo speeds of 2.8ghz on all 4 cores than that would make a good difference I'd bet. Might be able to just use Power Options in Windows and setup a High Performance plan that has the min processor state at 100% and max at 100% also. That should hold it at turbo speeds. Or XTU can disable EIST and that will not have it drop down to a 8x multiplier. Not sure how XTU would handle trying to overclock or just keep that cpu at it's max tho?? Would have to test that out.

From the testing I've been doing lately with my 6820K cpu in my GT72, that cpu is actually beating my 4790K clock for clock. I set both to 4ghz max turbo and the 6820K is ahead every time so far. I'm blown away by the performance of these Skylake cpu's in the new laptops this year. Amazing performance for sure applaud.gif ..

I've seen this model laptop with the 6700HQ for only $899 at Microcenter, but that one doesn't have the SSD

Has anyone had any issue with some inverse ghosting with the display? I just picked it up off of Amazon and fired up Reflex only to find that the screen looked like it was blurring together. I looked into it a bit further and can reproduce it on the desktop by dragging Firefox around in circles, causing the toolbar icons to leave a ghostly trail behind them. It's also noticeable in the UFO Ghosting test.
