[EuroGamer] Face-Off: Rise of the Tomb Raider on PC - Page 42

Well I got to the soviet installation and my FPS tanked from steady 60 to around 45 :/

If I leave everything on High and turn of shadows I get 60. I guess my CPU can't take it.

I think it's kind of a weird thing to compare, what you're essentially comparing is image quality vs frame rate.
A higher frame-rate is undoubtedly more fluid and smoother than a lower frame-rate, meanwhile a higher resolution increases the image quality and the graphical fidelity.

Compromises may have to be made where you have to decide between better image quality and a more fluid and smoother frame-rate, as hardware has finite computational power.

If you wish to sacrifice frame-rate for image quality then so be it, it's PC Gaming so we have choices and can control and customize how we experience our games.

I prefer a higher frame rate over image quality.

As-long as the game is rendering at a minimum of 1920x1080p then I'm good and I'll see if I can hit 60fps. If I have to tweak my graphical settings to do it then I will as long as I'm satisfied with trade off between the graphical fidelity and the fluidity of the frame-rate.

I say 60fps because I have a 60Hz display and I haven't experience over 72 fps before due to not having a display with a higher refresh rate.

Res over fps for me. I play mostly all my games on PS4 so 30fps looks fine to me. 4k @ 30fps is a huge upgrade for me. TR is not about the shooting (if your playing it right) its about the beautiful vistas and exotic locals and solving puzzles. I move slow and do lots of looking thumb.gif

People just dont seem to understand this. Yes 60Hz is better than 30Hz for every game but 120Hz is not needed in every game over 60Hz.

Also if you buy 4k display you can always use 100hz@1080p
and everything is still sharp as upscale is 1:4

And games like witcher, car simulators, rts are so much better on 4k even with lower fps

Because of single core performance bottleneck most aaa games will never reach 144fps even with 980ti in sli

Same for me. 1080p is so unbelievably ugly compared to 4k. It's like going 10 years back in time in terms of graphical fidelity. No thanks.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way. After playing Batman: Arkham Knight @ 4K for many months I tried 1080p and it was actually a bit "blurry". Less detail. Even my gf noticed it. The last time I benchmarked Batmak: AK was last September 2015 when RockSteady & WB was trying to fix the game. Batman: AK 100% Maxed + Nvidia GameWorks Enabled @ 4K game me roughly 40fps Average. That's very playable and respectable. There was no micro-stutter, no button lag or issues. The game has been patched several times since then, but I haven't benchmarked or played the game lately.

I loved playing Tomb Raider 2013 on with the highest settings @ 4K. I averaged 51fps [using old Catalyst 15.7.1 [7/29/2015]. The game looked great. I can't wait to getting around and playing Rise of The Tomb Raider @ 4K.

Just in case some of you didn't know, AMD has released Crimson 16.1.1 with several fixes, but the most important for this topic is the Tomb Raider fixes. I think someone might have mentioned it earlier. Crossfire is also available for Tomb Raider so I guess we will be seeing some of those benchmarks soon.

This game really makes me wish the new series of graphics cards would get here faster. I would love to be able to play this maxed out but I cannot.

These benchmarks would still be inaccurate because downclocking issue is still there and AFAIK reviewers do not use Clockblocker.

Some 4K screenshots, this game + arkham knight really set the bar for PC graphics.
