So the game does not seem to use more than 3 cores at most, two of which are being utilized by each 290X when CFX is enabled. The game uses 2 cores well, and a bit of the 3rd, despite task manager showing usage on all threads when 6 cores are enabled. HT did not improve things sadly. In comparison, TR 2013 used 4 cores extremely well.

Just so you are all aware, I retested with SSAA at x2. The FPS remained at 48. That's a sign of a CPU bottleneck. One things for sure, this game is seriously heavy on the CPU in this location.

So my min FPS is 48, with a 3930K. That's just pathetic!

Interesting, very cool and nice analysis, thanks!

you guys know about Guru3d benchmark where they tested the game running on 1 CPU core right ??

welcome to AMD. That's the reason I'm staying away from their DX11 cards, I've been burnt too many times.

Was the original TR given to a port house or did Crystal do it themselves? It does seem like the original was a far better port, hopefully there's a performance patch next month. My 2600k is running pretty high clocks, that might be why i'm seeing higher fps compared to the benches I've seen (around +10fps), unless there's some setting they had on that i don't. Not that Rottr is a bad port, it just seems overly taxing, but it is damn good looking.

Edit: Both ports were handled by Nixxes Software.

TR2013 was a Gaming Evolved title, while RoTR is a TWIMTBP title.

You draw your own conclusions. wink.gif

Damn, has anyone tried Very High textures in this game? Apparently it needs more than 4GB of VRAM.

I've seen a video where it gives GTX 970s in SLI a hard time with Very High textures, but this is easily fixed by lowering it to High textures.

It would be interesting to see how this performs on a GTX 980, 980 Ti and even a Titan X.

EDIT: It would also be definitively interesting to see how this performs on the Fury cards.

Yup, it's also hard to miss who they partnered with because they shove it in your face during the menus..

I've been playing with the very high preset, and from what i saw with AB i'm mostly at 60 with Vsync on.. I don't know if it's my CPU overclock or if the benchmarks cranked the other settings higher, but the game runs fine for me. I didn't check my fps for long because i wanted to enjoy the game, but it feels very smooth. I'm only at 1080p though.

Yup. That was the old build and without AMD's driver. The single core fiasco has been fixed but it's still limited as shown on my testing.

Rise of the Tomb Raider CPU Scaling with HBAO+ (Requested by sugerhell)

HBAO+ OFF (NO AO)

Verdict: There does not seem to be any large change in FPS in this CPU dominent location with HBAO. HBAO actually increased the FPS by 1 on average.

GPU Usage, HBAO+, SIX CORE
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Take that with a pinch of salt. This usage is typical when the GPU's are limited. MSI AB also has a hard time reading usage because, well, that's GCN for you! smile.gif

problem is that game itself really only use 1-2 cores and you see gain mainly because if you have 3 cores then system can run its processes on core 3 highly reducing context switches on core 1 and 2
also screen from process hacker can show how badly this game is singlethread bottlenecked

if DX12 patch will come these issues will be history smile.gif

Rise of the Tomb Raider Anisotropic Filtering Test

3930K 4.5GHz HT ON
2400MHZ DDR3
290X CFX RSC 16.1.1.
1.0v Build 610_1.64

Settings:

AF x16
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

AF x2
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Verdict: No visual loss that I can see, yet a 10 FPS boost! Much needed when running at 2560 x 1080 + SSAA x2. That's over 5 million pixels.
