Verdict: No visual loss that I can see, yet a 10 FPS boost! Much needed when running at 2560 x 1080 + SSAA x2. That's over 5 million pixels.

you picked a bad spot , also look over the snow located above Lara's right shoulder there's more detailed Snow

I've seen a video where it gives GTX 970s in SLI a hard time with Very High textures, but this is easily fixed by lowering it to High textures.

It would be interesting to see how this performs on a GTX 980, 980 Ti and even a Titan X.

EDIT: It would also be definitively interesting to see how this performs on the Fury cards.

I run very high. Afterburner says 6083/card , not sure how accurate but that seems like all of it. I don't notice any pop-in or problems from texture swaps. I am smooth with my setup.

So the game does not seem to use more than 3 cores at most, two of which are being utilized by each 290X when CFX is enabled. The game uses 2 cores well, and a bit of the 3rd, despite task manager showing usage on all threads when 6 cores are enabled. HT did not improve things sadly. In comparison, TR 2013 used 4 cores extremely well.

Just so you are all aware, I retested with SSAA at x2. The FPS remained at 48. That's a sign of a CPU bottleneck. One things for sure, this game is seriously heavy on the CPU in this location.

So my min FPS is 48, with a 3930K. That's just pathetic!

Are you using win10?

Wow that's a 23% performance hit with 16x Anisotropic Filtering, I don't think I've ever seen AF hit the performance like that on modern GPUs in a long time!

I suppose it's because you're running 2560 x 1080 which has 33% more pixels than 1080p, and on top of that SSAA x2!

Interesting, thanks for the info!
The technical aspects of this game are quite intriguing.

I tried 1080p FXAA. I got an 8 FPS boost between x2 and x16 AF.

Well spotted. In-game the textures and overall graphics still look top notch at x2.

I just tried mine at 1440p and got the same. It's crazy - at this point 16x AF is basically free in almost all games. I've never heard of it causing that kind of hit. Wonder if it's an AMD driver bug - the Nvidia performance guide didn't show that kind of impact:

Anisotropic Filtering has a negligible performance cost on PC, with the delta being just 1.2 frames per second between 2x and 16x.

If you upp the AF to x4, there is no difference with that and x16. See for yourself on the GeForce guide. thumb.gif

well that is very bad. You should post this to AMD and Crystal Dynamics.

Even though NVIDIA is having much better CPu overhead.. you would be scoring around 60-70FPS with "freaking" six core. They need to move it on VULKAN AND DX12.

I've had these issues for a few years now with overhead and other irregular things. Nobody would believe me until now with this game for some reason. I always make detailed reports for each game and nothing gets fixed by AMD or the Devs. They are only optimizing for the latest hardware to force us to upgrade. Bold statement, but I really don't care at this point.
