I found a Hard Drive. Is it dead?

Hi Fellaaaas.

OK. I found a 2.5" Hitachi 750GB Hard Drive. I'm not sure what the exact model is because I've hooked it up to an external case, but I'm pretty sure it's from a laptop. specool.gif

Found it in a basement after cleaning my friend's apartment. He left for his country and he ain't coming back. I spoke with him on the phone and he said I can keep it. He actually forgot about the HDD and he thought he threw it away 4 years ago. And now he want it no more. So it's mine. aaevil.gif

But it looked pretty banged up. exclamation.gif

You probably wonder what's the thread about. Here it's why.

What about the yellow warning? Should I be worried?

Thanks.

I would run a surface scan with something like MHDD.

Is that the best software?

I guess I should burn that into a CD and boot from it.

Hook the drive up via SATA port and run the WinSFT from this page:

https://www.hgst.com/support/hard-drive-support/downloads

It will do a short and long full diagnostic test. The long test includes a full media surface scan.

I've had a few hard drives in the past with reallocated sectors that were a result of power failure or a similar incident. After using Parted Magic to run a low-level format (writes zero's to the entire disc) the drives test fine afterwards. It's worth a shot at least.

Short Test found no problems.

Now the extended test.

I will try Parted Magic. Thanks for the hint !

Hi @eurotrade07!

Basically speaking Reallocated Sector Count are invisible bad sectors that have been swapped with reserve sectors. These sectors are no longer visible to your operating system and as such can never cause any more problems. For a specific software you can run a test on the HDD you can check if there's any in the manufacturers website.

However, I would suggest to monitor the drive and in case these numbers become very large in a very short period of time backup any data stored there because they could essentially making the drive unusable.

Hope this helps and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Cheers! smile.gif

Thanks MightyMiro. Also big thanks to bavarianblessed and the other people helping me. thumb.gif

That's from PARTED MAGIC. First I did a dd erase. Then format the drive.
