HELP!!! Random FPS Drops/Lag Spikes with Nvidia Drivers :(

Thread Starter
About a month ago, I downloaded the newest nvidia drivers up to date, and ever since then my computer went to ****. In games, most noticeably CS:GO, I've been getting random & SEVERE freezes/fps drops when I play a game. Every 30-60 seconds, my fps will drop from 300+ to 10-50 fps and my game will freeze for 1-2 seconds while my ping spikes up. The game is obviously unplayable and I tried to find a solution.

I tried completely uninstalling all nvidia drivers and backdating to previous versions, but nothing has fixed yet. I listened to the advice of a bunch of people experiencing the same issue after googling the issue but still no luck. I reformatted once and downloaded the newest drivers again and the problem still occurred, so I assumed it must be the drivers. I reformatted once more and this time left everything stock.. i let windows update all the drivers and I kept the nvidia drivers that windows update gave me (idr the version # but it was at least 6 months old). Ever since then, the problem had fixed itself. I didn't experience the issue again, until yesterday. I didn't update any drivers..but out of nowhere the problem came back.

Im getting tired of this BS **** driver support nvidia/windows is spewing out. Idk what the problem is. Please let me know what you guys think the problem is? If it is a driver issue, is there a specific driver I should rollback to that will fix my problem? frown.gif

Comp Specs:
Windows 10
CPU: i7 5960x
CPU cooler: swiftech h240x
Mobo: asus x99 deluxe lga2011-3
memory: g-skill ripjaws series 16gb (4x4gb) ddr4-2400
storage: 2 samsung 840pro 512gb sdd
videocard: msi gtx 980
psu: evga 1000w

Note: was running gpu-z and hwinfo last night while playing CS:GO and both temps maxed out around ~55 celcius... is that too hot for my cpu? I am running swiftech h240x cooler so idk why it goes up that high

BUMP: here is a video of the problem:

Thank you in advance redface.gif

55 is definitely not too hot. Pretty good actually. The fact that you've re-formatted (multiple times) kinda rules out almost all software related things, including Drivers. If it was an actual issue with the driver release, you would see others having the same issues. Probably time to start looking at possible hardware issues... I ran into similar random problems when a stick of RAM was bad... Random lockups, issues installing games, crashes, etc. Went through the same frustrating steps you have gone through with multiple re-formats and driver/software troubleshooting... An easy next troubleshooting step would be to run memtest.

Update:

  1. Reformated last night
  2. I ran memtest last night for 10 hours.. 0 Errors
  3. Updated to newest nvidia drivers & yet the problem is still occuring.
  4. Ran Geekbench 3 (32 bit tryout mode) here are the results: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/5070814
  5. Currently running Prime95. Been about 30-45 minutes so far so good....

Update:
been running prime95 for about 3 hours now and no failure. If i Play cs:GO the problem OCCURS within 15 minutes... so I REALLY think this is a software/driver issue. EITHER NVIDIA is messing up something OR STEAM...

ANY suggestions?! This is really starting to piss me off ;|

Didn't realize you were running Windows 10... I can't get to much in the way of websites while at work, but just googling Windows 10 Nvidia drivers CS:GO brings up a good amount of results... I don't have much experience troubleshooting Win10, but have heard plenty of driver horror stories to make my decision to stay away easy. Since you have already reformatted multiple times, would it be possible to reformat again with a different OS? Your temps and benchmarks look good.

I mean I want to try to stay on win10 if possible. It was working before.. I would like to fix this issue rather than find a solution around it. I will switch to win8.1 as a last resort

I just mentioned in my last post that I bought a new GPU yesterday. I got a 980TI and the problem is still occurring

is there an additional power plug (molex) on your motherboard to provide extra power to the PCIE slots?

I read somewhere that XMP profile on your ram may help, are you currently using XMP or is your ram timings/freq/voltage set manually.

Hello

what i will say will be crazy for some people but i will tell you that you should try your pc without case.. some case has a problem with PCI-E slot maybe your one broken ? also try different PCI slot as you have a board with 4 PCI-E slot thumb.gif
