How to test possibly dying PSU?

Specs in story:
CPU: i7 2600k
GPU: 7970
Mobo: Asrock P67 Extreme
PSU: 750 Watt Zalman

So I had an computer with a PSU I thought was dying because it would constantly restart or blue screen. One day, everything went black and nothing would boot. It turns out the motherboard was dead.

I replaced both the motherboard and the PSU with MSI mobo and a new Corsair PSU. However, the Zalman PSU was still alive - it had enough juice to power another dual core system I had.


While this PSU still can power on a low powered system, I suspect it is dying and might completely die with a higher powered system.

How do I test to see if the PSU to see if it is dying (eg. voltage fluctuations, shutoff at higher power, etc) without plugging it into my higher powered rig? I don't want to risk a bad PSU frying my other parts on my higher end system if it is truly going bad. But I don't have any way to test it at a decent load level either.

You can test its voltages with a digtal multi meter.
And what Corsair did you get and please dont say you got a CX or an RM?

Yep, I cheaped out and got a Corsair CX600 for $45. I paid $120 for that 750 Zalman, so I though I might as well just get multiple cheaper PSUs for the same price.

$15-25 more would've gotten you a proper PSU though...

I don't know how multimeters work. So a multimeter can test a PSU at its full load (or test PSUs at any amount of load)?

If the 12v has much less or more coming out it then the PSU is broken.
Same story with the 5v and 3,3v pins way less or more and its broken.

I had another tool (idk what it's called) and I had a motherboard software test it - the 12v, 5v, 3.3v rails all basically the proper amount of voltage for each rail. But this wasn't under load.

I'm asking if the multimeter can test the PSU under full load - if the Zalman can keep the 12v, 5v, and 3.3v rails within spec while drawing 750 watts. Can multimeters tell the PSU to draw its full wattage while testing the rails?
